License windows 2008 r2 enterprise to standard

    Question

  • Hi I have purchased 2008 R2 enterprise license with my box. But one of my application on VM does not work with 2008 R2 enterprise instead work ok on 2008 R2 standard.

My question is , is it possible (how) to?

Option1 : Install new hyper-v guest on 2008 R2 enterprise with 2008 R2 standard with out buying any new license?

Option2 : completely re-install with 2008 R2 standard and, and have new hyper-v guest on standard?

    Correction: 2008 R2 Enterprise edition

  • Hi, yes if it's bought via the VLSC, not if retail or OEM. To be sure call the VLSC center: (866) 230-0560.

With enterprise you got 4 "free" VM too. An 1:4 ratio (physical / virtual) if and only if the physical server only have the Hyper-V's role. The best path is 2008R2 ENT (hyper-v) (physical) and 2008R2STD in a VM and you will got place for 3 others

  • Hi

Sorry, but If you purchased a 2008 (not R2), you can't go higther in version. You could had been able to do the other way with a volume license (License 2008R2 and switch to 2008)
