Cloning Desktop and Server OS in Collections

    Question

  • Does MS System Center (with VMM) and in conjunction with Hyper-v provide the ability to clone Desktops/Servers that form part of a Collection?

On the back of that, is there a way updates to the original OS template can be pushed out to the Collections as well.

Citrix use Machine Creation Services to achieve this and I am looking for an alternative that provides matching functionality.

  • Take a look at my blog post on this

We made use of Hyper-V, SCVMM, and Orchestrator to deploy new VM's which automatically join a remote desktop collection.

You wouldn't want to clone it, but you could create a template then deploy from that template.

Happy to provide further assistance if required.

  • Hi,

Firstly, please note that Microsoft does not allow cloning operating systems.

However, with SCVMM and SCCM, we can deploy virtual machines and Windows Server/client more efficiently.

For more information, you can ask questions in System Center forums.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi

In the past I looked into that, and SCVMM allow a 1:1 machine connection or "allocation". Not a 1:X like the PVS with a golden image's VHD like with citrix xendesktop, or vmware view.

Like Jeremy_Wu's told, you can deploy to new computers, but it will be to use the console to alloc that machine to a user after.

The only information I have that look like the competitor is MED-V but never tested it out. (The whitepaper tell about Desktop Virtualization, but when I read it it seem like a Streaming package like APP-V or XenApp Offline pack)
