Upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 using MDT

    Question

  • Greetings,

Lets assume we have SCCM 2012 R2, ADK 8.1 and MDT 2013. We would like to use those tools to send out an upgrade from existing Windows 7 machines to Windows 8.1. By upgrade I mean that everything Windows 7 has in terms of applications, desktop icons etc remain. Is this possible and if so, what are the steps to do it using MDT?

    Cheers

"Upgrade" was deprecated in MDT 2012 Update 1 in favor of "Refresh". Why?

You can perform an "upgrade" with an *unmodified* Windows 8.1 Install.wim file. Once you create a *custom* wim file with sysprep, Windows 8+ will not support Upgrade.

Also note that *new* for Windows 8.1, you can only *Upgrade* and migrate applications from Windows 8. If you want to migrate applications, you can upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 then to Windows 8.1.

  • I thought that might be the case. Well, that makes it really easy for ua deployment guys but probably a pain for many users.

hello in my case anybody do this procedure with MDT 2012 update 1 for Windows 7 to Windows 8 automatically, depending on the end use case:

Upgrading from Windows 8.0 to Windows 8.1 can be performed using the following methods:
If you have…  Consider these options:
Computers running Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro (retail- or OEM-activated), or Windows RT  Follow the steps on the Windows 8.1 website to install the free update from the Windows Store.
Computers running Windows 8 Enterprise or Windows 8 Pro, volume activated  You can fully automate the process by simply running “setup.exe /auto:upgrade” from the Windows 8.1 installation files.
