Windows Installer - Can not install any .MSI File

    Question

  • Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2
    Dell PE1800
    2 GB RAM
    Windows Installer 4.5

Discovered the issue when trying to upgrade Blackberry Enterprise to a more recent version. Started the installation and after answering the setup.exe questions, the .msi is called to start the installation and it just fails.

Ran all of the Windows updates, reinstalled SP2, re-ran all updates to make sure there was nothing else and retried the BES install with the same results. RIM said the issue was the Windows Installer service. Started checking into that and after much troubleshooting, downloaded the MS MDAC Checker (.msi file as well) and tried that. Got the same result. Answered all of the initial questions, but when the install tried to start, it just fails.

Several errors in the Event Log, but nothing helpful. They are listed below. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. The same five errors are logged no matter what .msi file tries to install.

  • Hi,

You can export the following registry key from another working Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 machine:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msiserver

Then copy the reg file to this problematic machine, double-click the reg file to import the registry key.

Note: you’d better backup the registry key on your problematic machine before importing the registry key.

  • I'd enable verbose logging to see what you get.

How to enable Windows Installer logging

Then post a link to public skydrive location of files.

  • Done. Here are the results.

Error 1305. Error reading from file D:\Software\Microsoft\MDAC Checker\cc_x86.msi.  System error 1008. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.

    === Logging stopped: 4/11/2011  9:04:47 ===

Already checked permissions on the file and they look fine. I can delete/move/copy, etc. on the file w/o issues.
Have done some other checking and I'm leaning towards a MDAC problem. However, I've already reinstalled SP2 which would reapply MDAC 2.8 SP2, so I'm coming up with bupkiss on that avenue as well.
    Thanks

  • Solved ..

I was getting this error when i was trying to install MS office 2007 in Windows server 2003 64 bit,

    Causes and solutions ..

    1. corruption of msiexec.exe may be the cause of the problem. In this case you have to download or copy this file and replace at %systemroot%/system32\msiexec.exe.

    2. Go to the path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msiserver and make sure that value data entry is "C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exe /V" in DWORD Imagepath.

    3. If  any earlier installed version of MS Office not uninstalled properly.

Go to the link  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971179 and download MS office instillation pack and run it on reported machine. After restart the machine try to reinstall the MS office , if would be install successfully.

    Thanks in advance
