SCREENSHOT HOT BUTTON WOES | ONE NOTE WITH 8.1
-
I apologize for being so blunt, however this is one of the most annoying "features" ever. I work daily (for MS) and need to take screenshots daily. I have always been able to use "Windows + S" before with OneNote installed to take a quick, easy, immediate capture of whatever I need to capture. Now, this is not so easy and believe it or not one of the most annoying things I'm having to deal with as I can no longer take screenshots of drop down menus due to having to click/select something else first to take a screenshot rather than hot-key directly to screenshot... So, now to take a screenshot with OneNote, I have to "Windows + N" then either click on "Screen Clipping" or "S", which makes any drop downs or selected items I have open go away... Now if I press "Windows + S" it takes me to search things, which is ridiculous and redundant as all I have to do to search things is to press "Windows" and then start typing. Why would we add a redundant feature that negates another Microsoft Product feature? Please help to resolve and/or let me know how to change search "hotkey" so I can use "Windows + S" to screenshot with OneNote as I used to be able to with Windows 7 and Windows 8, prior to 8.1.
Thank you.

Hi,
This is by design. Here is a work around for your favorite WIN + S shortcut key:

This does not help. All this explains is standard printscrn and windows snipping tool. These tools are not as good as Microsoft OneNote snipping tool and you still have to click on another icon to be able to select a specific portion of the screen. With OneNote, it was just "Windows + S" and automatically froze the screen so that you could select exactly what you wanted and past immediately into another screen/doc/email/etc. without saving to file or anything first.
If someone can get me OneNote snipping back by hotkey I'd be happy. :)

I was equally surprised and frustrated when I too realized this. I live on OneNote and cannot believe MS added a useless redundant feature at the expense of a useful existing one. the problem is that when you receive the notice to update, you think about making sure everything is backed up or cloudbased (thank you Skydrive), etc. You don't think to look for a problem like this proactively because who would think of some such specific drawback. It isn't until you go to use the function that you realize it's gone and too late.
Now that I have vented a bit, I found the solution. Evidently it wasn't available earlier in the year but I just updated to 8.1 (and therefore just started looking for the solution) so tried it and it worked:
Win + Shift + S
All is right in the world again.

Hold the Window + Shift + S keys and the function works exactly the same as it did before. You only have to click one more button (shift) simultaneously with the other two. How does that double your time? Or did you not read my post to the solution? That 3 button combination brings up the crosshairs just like it used to.

The screenshot feature for OneNote (even using the new key strokes) appears to only capture screenshots on the desktop. So, for example, if I am using the Windows 8 Internet Explorer (non-desktop), I am unable to capture a screenshot.
So, if I go on the premise that this was not a blunder (oversight) but was done because it is designed to work this way, it means that if I am a heavy user of OneNote (which I have been up to this point), I should avoid using Metro (New UI) applications in favor of desktop applications.
I suspect this is not the message Microsoft would like to have articulated by some of the most ardent supporters of MS products.
<It should be noted that Evernote does not suffer from this problem. Evernote becomes an even more attractive option if issues like this persist.>
RECOMMENDATION: Fast track a solution to this problem to keep the OneNote faithful, faithful. Screenshots should be able to be capture regardless of the invoking application (Metro or Desktop).
Today's the day!

May I suggest an alternative 3rd party program for capturing screenshots: IrfanView
Its capture facility can be mapped to a function key or even done on a timer, and it can load up the clipboard, save a file on disk, or bring up the screenshot in its own UI. It can capture all monitors, the current monitor, the current window, or even the client area of the current window and the interface to set it up is intuitive.
I have never used OneNote but I can't see how screen grabs could be done much more easily or flexibly than the way IrfanView can be set to do it.
