Windows Server 2012 Essentials - server backup very slow (client is quick)

    Question

  • The server backup is taking 12 hours for <1Tb data!

Running Essentials 2012 R2 on HP NL40 MicroServer with 8Gb RAM. The OS is on a separate drive to a storage space where the data is held. Most of the data is static and so I can't figure out why a full server backup takes 12 hours?

On WHS v.1 it took about 1 hour. I am guessing it is doing a full backup rather than incremental but I can't see how to change this.

D: is a simple partition with no RAID or redundancy.

E: is the storage space with all imprtant data which is about 750Gb

It's backing up to an external USB 2.0 drive, but previously (WHS v.1) this was very quick so it's not the backup device

  • Hi,

If it is a full backup then please test a second backup to see if it still takes a long time.

Please noticed that in right panel of Windows Server Backup, go to Configure Performance Settings and make sure it is a Faster backup performance or custom with incremental backup instead of full backup.

If issue still exists please check the log files related to Windows Server Backup:

    Windows\logs\WindowsServerBackup\SystemStateBackup <date><time>.log
    Windows\logs\WindowsServerBackup\SystemStateBackup_Error <date><time>.log

I think these log files may be helpful. Specifically as backup is finished correctly, you could check if any file or folder takes a long time for backup.
