FIM 2010 R2 SP1 Install Error Microsoft.IdentityManagement.DatabaseUpgrade_tracelog.txt. included....

    Question

  • Tried to install 2010 R2 SP1 for the Service and Portal

I clicked Update and it attempts to runs but the windows program errors out with:

Looking at the event log in windows I found:

Microsoft.IdentityManagement.DatabaseUpgrade failed to upgrade the database. To investigate the cause of failure, refer to the trace file at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager\2010\Service\Microsoft.IdentityManagement.DatabaseUpgrade_tracelog.txt.

Here is the last bit of that file....

    Any Ideas

  • Hi,

The FIM Service database has a table called 'fim.version'. Could you please post the version value in that table?

There is the possibility that a previous installation failed and was not rolled back successfully.

    Best regards,
    Pieter.

  • 1 row with two columns returned:

    Column "Version" : -1

    Column "BinaryVersion": 4.1.3114.0

  • Ok, that explains a few things!

The values on my server are:

    Version: 1115
    BinaryVersion: 4.1.3114.0

My server already has SP1 installed, so probably a previous installation failed. Is it possible for you to check the value of this column before you started trying the update? If you're not able to, let me know. I'll probably be able to find a server containing the R2 release somewhere ;).

    Best regards,
    Pieter.

  • Pieter is correct. The fact that your 'Version' value shows as -1 means that there was a previous upgrade that failed. A failed upgrade always sets this to -1. In that case, no future upgrades will work. You need to restore backup of your FIMService DB from before the failed upgrade attempt and attempt to upgrade that instance instead.
