DPM 2012 crashes with error 940 and is Unable to connect to the database because of a fatal database error

    Question

  • DPM is crashing almost every hour with the following error error below. Did a fresh install of DPM 2012 SP1, tryed different SQL databases (2008+2012) with al the updates and CU releases. Server is fully patched. Platform is Windows Storage server 2008 R2 Standard, fully patched, and with the latest HP software. SQl server is a local standalone install.

The description for Event ID 940 from source MSDPM cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

Unable to connect to the database because of a fatal database error. It is unlikely that the database itself has been damaged.  Review the event log and take appropriate action. Make sure that SQL Server is running.

  • Looks like the HP All-in-One Storage Manager is the problem. Disabled the HP Automated Storage Manager Server service and the problem is gone. Fingers crossed and hope for the best.
