Most Word Document Properties don't pass over to a SharePoint Document Library even IF you create custom columns that match the same Field Names used in Word. Why is this?

SharePoint columns have to be populated manually or you have to add an additional product to automatically extract the document properties and populate them into SharePoint columns in libraries. This is as designed.
On second thoughts (proposing and then unproposing the previous post) I think this is too dogmatic.
As the OP writes some fields (/columns) are populated from Word documents and some aren't.
I think I gave the differences (which are and which aren't) in my 2007 book - with Word 2003 and Word 2007 (and I also remember slight changes in how this worked with Word 2010 when my 2010 book was written) but unfortunately my copies of both those books are several thousand miles away as I am on holiday so I can't look it up.
The first thing Mr Cricket we need to know is which Word version you are asking about and a confirmation that you are using it with WSS 3.0 or MOSS 2007.
