GPT and Hyper-V

    General discussion

  • I noticed when attempting to use an existing 64TB VHDX hard disk that Windows Server 2012 would not install, not would any version.

I can use GPT for data but not for the system disk.

  • You should do UEFI install if you want to boot from GPT. If we are talking about a VM installation here, UEFI for VM is supported starting Windows Server 2012 R2 only.

  • Hi,

The max size of a VHDX it supported is 64TB. So it could be a by design issue. See:

Hyper-V Virtual Hard Disk Format Overview
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831446.aspx

The main new features of the VHDX format are:

Support for virtual hard disk storage capacity of up to 64 TB.

Protection against data corruption during power failures by logging updates to the VHDX metadata structures.

Improved alignment of the virtual hard disk format to work well on large sector disks.

  • I have my web sites on a 64TB VHDX files using the ReFS file system.

That is not used by default in favor of MBR and NTFS on blank disks on hardware

Seems I have to prepare disks before using for larger volumes
