Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 - Windows Update Errors...

    Question

  • Hello,

I've a windows 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 server that I've applied Windows updates to this evening. A large number were successful, however there are 13 that will not install and keep on failing. I've run sfc/scannow which found and repaired some errors - restarted server - no difference.

Please see windowsupdate.log output below (apologies for the length). I've tried installing individual updates from the 13 but it makes no difference and the errors are just the same. It seems to be the same error for each update although unfortunately doesn't mean much to me. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks gents.

  • I've renamed the softwaredistribution folder in windows directory and I've also tried deleting the c:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml file as I've seen suggested by Microsoft support. No joy. The contents of the checkSUR.log file within the "CBS" folder are pasted below...

  • Has the update readiness tool been re-run?

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/What-is-the-System-Update-Readiness-Tool?SignedIn=1

    Then post the contents of
    %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

If you still have the same CSI Missing Winning Component Key then I'd try a repair install.

  • Hey Dave!

Thank you very much for your response!

I'm just in the process of running the server 6.1 tool now on the server in question. I'll post the outcome on here one way or another.

    Cheers - hugely appreciated.

    Matt

  • Unfortunately that made no difference - the updates still won't install and the checksur.log file still contains the same data...

  • Hey guys,

Thanks for your help / responses.

I resolved the issue by performing an "in place" upgrade of the OS using the OS media. Once complete - I had to install all outstanding updates again but this worked without issue. All up to date now.

Worth mentioning that the upgrade cleared the checksur.log file of errors also (I ran the checker again after the upgrade prior to applying Windows updates again).

    Many thanks.

  • Just a word of warning to anyone considering an in-place upgrade to resolve this issue. The server upon which I experienced these issues is a SCCM 2012 SP1 site server. Once I'd run the upgrade and then re-installed all of the outstanding updates. IIS7 lost all configuration relating to SCCM Software updates (WSUS) and also relating to my SCCM 2012 application catalog. Removing the application catalog roles from the site server and then re-adding and configuring them sorted the application catalog issue.

However, SCCM software updates (WSUS) was more hassle. It basically broke WSUS (which SCCM uses to sync Windows updates) - I couldn't even uninstall WSUS to reinstall it as it would error. So had to follow this guide.

    http://davidvielmetter.com/tricks/wsus-wont-uninstall-or-re-install/#comment-80112

I also couldn't reuse my old WSUS DB's and had to create new DB's and then re-sync.

    I hope this helps someone.

    Cheers guys.
