Self Service user and startup under BIOS

    Question

  • what permission is required to grant a self-service user the ability to change the boot order under the BIOS section for a VM?

All replies

  • They need to edit the configuration of the VM.

There isn't a built-in way to make that granular to just the BIOS setting in SCVMM or Hyper-V - but  3rd party application could do it in front of Hyper-V alone.

  • I'd be alright with allowing this user class to edit all the VM configuration options...

    Is that possible?

  • Absolutely.

You are using SCVMM, right?  Just give them the permissions.

  • I've created a 'user role' group called 'Linux Admins'

I've set the resources to the 2 VMs I want to allow access

Under 'actions' I've granted most things that make sense to me (Local Admins, Pause/Resume, Remote Connection, Save, Shut Down, Start, Stop

The user can go in and change the boot order (for example) - it says 'ok' - but when you open it again, it hasn't actually changed

Can you please tell me what I'm missing?

Save means save it to the Library, Share is pass to another user, "local Administrator"..  hmm..

Looks like Author might be the one.

  • I granted 'author'

I connect as my test user, move PXE boot to the top, click OK

    it seems happy

i go back and it still has CD as the top option

  • There should be a corresponding change settings job in SCVMM - did it complete or fail?

  • i make the change as an admin and I see the change in the job history

i make the change as my 'self service user' and it doesn't log anything (success or failure)
