  • Use the following SQL code:

    SELECT @@VERSION

    Sample output would be:

    Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) - 10.50.1617.0 (X64) Apr 22 2011 19:23:43. Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. Developer Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7601: Service Pack 1)

That query should give you the info you need in any version.

  • You need to go through minimum requirements for each version for that and see for which one your system configuration fits within.

For example see link below for 2008R2

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(v=sql.105).aspx

Based on that you can download and install the required version.

Well, you can download it from this link:

    Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2)

After installation, you can install SQL SERVER 2005 without problem except Enterprise edition which needs server OS.

  • Try to use OS & SQL Server most recent possible for you. SQL 2005 is running in last years of his life + XP support is already stopped.

As mention by other, you download required windows installer form Microsoft site & install.

One doubt, Are you updating your system for available windows update, as per me windows installer should be a part of updates.
