Update server will not add PCs

    Question

  • Hi,

Our company's WSUS server was broker recently. I reinstalled the server but got into pproblems:

    1) The PCs are not joining to the server except several of them.

    2)  For the PCs joined to the server don't allow me to move them to any group.

Any idea what I did wrong??

    Thanks.

  • David,

I think it's the problem of the WSUS client Id. And I also found the solution!!! That's the application from the link of you "Wsus Third-Party Software Publishing : http://wsuspackagepublisher.codeplex.com". Inside after you scan for all the PCs in the AD, you can collect and reset the WSUS client Id for all PCs!!!!

Many thanks for your help and will report back if any other problem occurs.

  • Hi Hons,

    1) The PCs are not joining to the server except several of them.

This may be due by communication problems between Wsus server and Clients computer. Look at C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log to see if any message is log regarding this problem.

Ensure you clients computers try to contact the good Wsus server by looking in the registry :

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

Are you using HTTPS between Wsus Server and Clients ? Does the certificate OK ?

    2)  For the PCs joined to the server don't allow me to move them to any group.

Please go to Wsus console -> Options -> Computers and ensure you have selected "Use Update Service Console" instead of "Use GPO"

  • Hi David,

Many thanks for your fast help.

I was able to change from Wsus console -> Options -> Computers and allow PCs to change group.

As for the C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log, it's very long and seems lots of error alos. Is it possible to clean it up and record the errors again??

We're in an Intranet so we didn't use SSL nor HTTPS.

I used the same GPO to all the PCs but only handful of them show up on the server.

    And suggestions??

On a computer, stop the "Window Update" service, rename C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log into C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log.bak. Start the "windows Update" service.

    Wait 10 seconds.

Launch the command 'WuAuClt /DetectNow'. Look at C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log.

I ran the log and got some warning. Still, no PC report to the server.

    Thanks.

Could you, stop the 'Windows Update' service. Rename the folder "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" into "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution-old"

    Start the 'Windows Update' service.

    Wait 10 seconds.

And run the command : WuAuClt /ResetAuthorization /DetectNow

    Wait 60 seconds.

    Look at C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log

David, I believe you have misread the log (no wonder given that it was posted in 4 point typeface). The actual error presented is the very commmon 0x8024400D/0x80244015/SOAP 0x012c.

  • I ran the log and got some warning. Still, no PC report to the server.

This is a very common error condition, and most commonly presented as a manifestation of duplicated SusClientIDs.

However, in this case, we also have the condition that the server was previously installed (suggesting the clients were previously working), but subsequently reinstalled (due to the server being "broken").

It may well be relevant to the discussion as to what "broken" means in this context, and exactly what procedures were used to reinstall the WSUS server.

First, it seems that the initial reinstallation of the server was set with Options->Computers to "Use Group Policy..." which blocked your ability to change group memberships in the console. This is not the default setting, so it begs the question of why this option was set to "Use Group Policy..." in the first place. If "Enable client-side-targeting" is ENABLED in Group Policy, then setting this value incorrectly will be problematic (as will attempting to change group memberships via the console).

But more significantly is the other observation ... that most clients are not even joining to the server. (And the log snippet confirms this as fact.) Now, a simple reinstallation of a WSUS Server should not impact the ability of the WUAgent to communicate with it at all... although in the current moment, failing to PATCH the WSUS Server after reinstallation can cause all sorts of probems. So that's the first step.

    • What version of the Windows Update Agent is installed on this client?
    • What version of WSUS is actually in use?

Please post the logfile as David previously requested. While he did misread the error code in the log snippet, his request is still valid as a "next step". We need to see a full logfile, including Service Start entries, to determine the true state of the client.

    Lawrence,

Refer to your post. I installed the WSUS 3 sp2 onto the server but I just use GPO to redirect the clients PCs to connect to the server. The setting is like http://HNL-WSUS1. Do I need to install any update agents on the client side??

    Thanks.

Attached a new log file (Clean).

  • And this is the GPO is set.

  • Can you open the Wsus console (wsus.msc), select the root of your server and look at the server version :

  • Your GPO seem to be ok.

    Assuming :

     * The Wsus Server name is really HNL-WSUS1

     * Clients computers are able to resolve this name into the correct IP.

     * HTTPS is not in use on this Wsus server.

     * IIS is listen on port 80 on the Wsus server.

     * The firewall on the Wsus server is off or correctly set to allow incoming connection from clients.

  • Ok, so clients and server seem to be at the same versioning level (.256). It's a good point,  but a little bit strange. Why your client try to auto-update :

MiscWARNING: Digital Signatureson file C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\SelfUpdate\wuident.cab are nottrusted: Error 0x800b0001

Have you wipe the folder 'SoftwareDistribution' as I asked in my previous post ?

  • Log file too big. How can I upload it??
    Wednesday, October 16, 2013 6:33 PM
  • Stop the "Window Update" service

    Rename C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log into C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log.bak2.

    Start the "windows Update" service.

    Wait 10 seconds.

Launch the command 'WuAuClt /DetectNow'. Post the content of C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log.

  • I have read it quickly, don't see any error. I will have a deeper look tomorrow (because it is 23h45 here :-)).

The computer found 55 updates and have start to download it.

Does this computer appear in wsus now ?

  • The PC didn't show up in the WSUS but gets the updates like some other PCs. I also found some PCs showed up and then disappeared from the WSUS. The total number of PCs remain at 10-15.

Anyway. Have a good night. Talk with you tomorrow.

  •  I also found some PCs showed up and then disappeared from the WSUS.

Are you using master (image of Windows installation) to set up your new computers ? If yes, you probably forgot to clear the Wsus ClientID on the primary computer (reference computer). This is no done by SysPrep.

    Please, stop Windows Update service.

    delete these RegKey :

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\SusClientId

    start Windows Update service.

    wait 10 seconds

    Launch WuAuClt /DetectNow

  • Does the computer appear into the Wsus Console now ?

AU   # WARNING: Failed to find updates with error code 8024400E

Not good. This generally occurs when the Wsus db is corrupt. Are you using SQL or WID as database ?

  • Nope, still doesn't show up. Using MS SQL Express.
    Thursday, October 17, 2013 5:51 AM
  • Do you have imported the old db from the previous Wsus server or rebuild the SQL from scratch ?
