recovey of windows key after theft

    Question

  • So one of our small office clients was burglarized. The stolen items include the server and backup drive. (off site backup is files only)

The sbs2011 license key was activated, but the sticker was on the side of the stolen server. As we rebuild the environment, is there a Microsoft supported method of getting a replacement key?

The vendor they bought the os software from doesn't keep a record of the key

  • Hi:

Not to state the obvious, but this information should be part of network documentation.  However, this should not be a big deal.  Assuming you have backups, simply restore from backup and the key will be in the restored system.  Once restored there are a number of utilities that will extract the product key to add to documentation..

  • If you only have a file backup I guess you will not be able to recover the key anyways but surely with insurance you will be able to purchase a new license as part of the claim. Also if the license was OEM then you wouldn't legally be allowed to install on new hardware anyway ?....

obviously either way you need to act fast with demise of sbs 2011 sales in the market
