Backup and Restore

    Question

  • In a database, there will be MDF file and LDF file and if we create there will be an addtional secondary file called .ndf right.

this question seems to be simple very confusing, how many files will be there in .bak file of a database and how to find out that? is it that to use RESTORE WITH HEARDERS ONLY or something different?

    Venkat,

When you take backup by default option you just create one backup file even though your database might have N number of data and log files. And all data and log file information would be present in the backup. You can take backup on multiple drives as well.

Restore filelist only will give you actually database and log files contained in backup

restore header only gives backup header information.

Take a backup of a database having multiple log and data file and then run restore header only and restore filelistonly to see the difference.
