Windows Server 2012 Lag when bringing up printer list

    Question

  • Windows Server 2012 has a serious lag when bringing up a list of printers.  We have several thousand network printers and it takes > 5 minutes to bring up and sort the list.   Windows Server 2008/2003 was almost immediate with no lag.   Is there a switch or index that needs to be turned on or a procedure done to speed this process up?

Answers

  • Open an elevated command prompt

    dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:Printing-Admintools-Collection

Or you can add the Print Server Role to your print server using the Server Manager UI

  • You have thousands of local printers, or connections to shared printers on another machine?

    For local printers, use printmanagement.msc.
