SQLCLUSTER LUN Moves

    Question

  • In effort to move the MS Distributed Transaction Coordinator to its new LUN on SCALE-1, the “File Server” resource on the SharePoint SQL Instance will not come online anymore. The file server resource is not used by SharePoint or any other system It’s failed state has not affected anything, but it annoys that it won’t come back online. The DTC role has the same name and IP address as its predecessor.

The Questions are: Do we even need this feature on the SQL instance? If so, how to make it start? If not, is it safe to delete?

    Thanks,

  • Thanks Edwin for reply to my request for help. The problem was that the File Server feature had lost its storage dependency settings. We have assigned it the proper storage dependencies, and it came back online.

The File Server is a "feature" that is part of the SQL Instance SQLCLUSTER on the failover cluster. This "feature" failed to start after the MSDTC change out a couple days ago but now it's working again.

    Thanks,

  • Are you referring to the File Share Witness in a SQL Server Availability Group configuration? If so, this depends on how your cluster is configured and how many replicas you have for your Availability Group configuration. The file share witness acts as a tie-breaker in a 2-node cluster for Windows to decide if the clustered resource can be automatically failed over. For a 3-node cluster, you do not need this because you already have majority votes, unless you configured the nodes not to have votes in the cluster.
