File attributes on no administrator access files

    Question

  • Hello,

I want to reset the archive bit on all files on the C drive of our server, but many files are either opened, or only accessible by system accounts (Like one is TrustedInstaller)!  Because of this, the backup software, or the administrator account, are not able to reset that attribute, and those files are backed up every day!

How to reset those files without having to modify the security of all the C drive, and shutting down all processes?

    Thanks, Dominic

  • Hi,

We don't suggest you modify the system file permission, that's will cause unknow issue.

  • Hi

What backup software you use ? Never got this problem with wbadmin or other third part software that use vss that I used.

  • BackupExec 2010 SP3, which uses "System Logon Account".  I guess this account does not have sufficient rights to reset that attribute bit in every folder!

  • Strange issue for backupexec. Of course do you got the advance file open option ? If not, and the file is always open then the vss would not be able to lock it for a copy.

I often remove some filesystem file from the backup, as I usually get the system-state. You can't easily recover a server OS by dumping only the entire c:\, usually it's easier to make a empty server and dump the system-state into it.

  • Yes, AOFO is active, and turned on for this job, in automatic mode.

    Thanks, Dominic
