No internet access through hosted network in Windows 8.1

    Question

  • I am asking this question with a lot of expectation that I will get a solution for this issue. I have got seen a lot of questions being asked about this but there is no proper answer.

I use a USB modem in Windows 8.1 laptop. I want to share the internet to other devices by creating a hostednetwork. I used the netsh commands to create and start the hostednetwork. The wifi  hotspot got created as 'Local area network connection *14’. The internet from the USB modem was shared to ‘Local area network connection *14’. Other devices are able to connect to this and are getting IP address in the range of 192.168.137.X. The issue is that, the devices are not able to access internet. Please help in troubleshooting this issue.

Please don’t give the instructions to create a hostednetwork or advice to use 'Virtual router plus'. I have already done all sorts of basic troubleshooting. Everything looks fine, but there is no internet connection to other devices.

I am able to share internet using the same USB modem with same method in Windows 7. Please let me know if any more info is needed.

Answers

  • Hi,

Have you tried to update or reinstall the adapter drivers from the manufacture website?

Please also disable all other network adapters, sometimes conflicts with other network adapters in your computer prevent WiFi from working.

Type ipconfig /renew (with administrator privileges), check if it make any difference.

And You can set the IP address in other device manually,  choose another IP address in the same sub network (use an arbitrary number between 2 and 253 for the last position of the address).

  • Hi,

Can client PC successfully ping the host PC?

Run the Network and Internet troubleshooter, check it can give us some valuable diagnostic report.

Please update or reinstall your network adapter driver form manufacture’s website manually.

Temporarily disable firewall and security softwar.

Try to set ics service start mode to auto(delayed)

    run->services.msc->internet connection sharing->startup type-auto(delayed)

    restart pc or stop/start service.

If issue persists, please free contact us.

  • Hi Yolanda,

Troubleshooter did not give much info as it could not find any issues

Disabled firewall and security software, still devices are not getting internet access

Set the ics service to auto(delayed), restarted - no internet to other devices

I have done all possible trouble shooting from my end.

Connectify hotspot is able to create a hotsopt and internet from Wifi was shared
to other devices, but that is not using ICS method.

I used CCProxy, used the hotspot ipaddress as the proxy server for http with
port 808. Configured the other devices with the proxy address
192.168.137.1 port 808. Using this i was able to browse webpages from
other devices. But games and applications like skype, viber, facetime
    etc were not working.

With the above observations i dont think there is any issue with the device driver.

I have Virtualbox installed. Will that create any issues? Any thoughts on that?

    Please help.

  •

I was also having the same problem and I tried many things including the suggestions given here. None worked. Ultimately, I manually entered DNS of my ISP in the client devices (Nokia N8 and ipod touch) and everything was back again. Hope this works for others also who are facing the same problem.
