Win Server 2008 R2 on Microserver

    Question

  • I've just set up my new micro server with Windows Server 2008 R2. My plan was to use this as a backup device for all my home computers and use it as a NAS. The server has 2 3tb drive which i've set up as RAID1 so this is where I'd like to store all my files and backups. In order for all my PC's to back up to the server is it correct I need to promote the server to a domain controller and connect all my pc's to the domain? Or is there another way of doing this? Or could I just access the server on the network from my pc without needing to join it to the domain? Only asking as I heard in order to join to the domain I would need a computer running Win7 pro or enterprise etc and one of my machines only runs the home edition. What is the best option for this situation?

  • Windows server does not have to be domain joined

For good performance, at least 2048MB RAM is recommend so that there is some space for buffering files etc

  • if you have an existing AD forest, you are better off adding the storage server to it

  • Hi,

Do you mean that you want to save all PC's backup to the server 2008 r2? If so, you need to create a shared folder on the server and give other PC’s administrators write permission to access the shared folder. When you create a backup on one PC, you need to backup to a network location and type the server 2008 r2’s credential. Then you don’t need to promote the server to a domain controller and connect all pcs to the domain.

    Regards,

    Mandy
