Windows 2008 r2 (Validate This Cluster...) 'The servers do not all have the same software updates.' pre-check for SQL Server 2008 cluster install.

    Question

  • Hello am getting the above Warning error message (2 nodes within cluster) which is listing...

    ------------------

    Validate Software Update Levels
Validate that all tested servers have the same software updates installed.
Validating that all servers have the same software updates...

    Software Updates missing on 'Server1':
    All software updates present

    Software Updates missing on 'Server2':
    Hotfix Id  Description
    KB2829530  Security Update

The servers do not all have the same software updates.

    ------------------

I've totally updated both Servers-nodes with all the latest Windows Updates and still get this.  I check on Server2 which does look like is missing that Hotfix Id, which any recommendations to fix and pass this last validation test?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hello,

Please open the Command Prompt and run the following command:

    C:> systeminfo

Or run the get-hotfix command on PowerShell on both servers and compare the list of fixes installed.

If the list of fixes is the same on both servers, then it could a false positive.

    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks Alberto for your response, much appreciated.

Interesting this post http://www.chicagotech.net/netforums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=14918  sounds kind of similar in that someone (Rene?) mentions of superceding patches.  Would it then be safe to say that my KB2829530 warning listed above doesn't need to get matching installed because KB2838727 (which both of our servers have installed) supercedes it which this cluster validate warning can be ignored & can proceed to install SQL 2008 cluster setup?

  • Hello,

If you confirmed the list of patches is the same, please ignore the warning.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hello,

As Alberto post above, this is a warning only. you can ignore this Validate warning and continue with your cluster.

Validate makes a WMI query to all the nodes to obtain a list of what hotfixes have been applied, then compares the list and flags warnings for any inconsistencies it finds.  Because hotfixes and SP's are cumulative, there can be cases where you install a cumulative hotfix and Validate gives a false positive. That's why this is just a Warning.

You can refer to the following blog about this:
