September 2013 Office Updates Keeps Reinstalling

    Question

  • The following September 2013 updates keep reinstalling everyday:

Security Update for Microsoft Office 2007 suites (KB2760411)
Security Update for Microsoft Office 2007 suites (KB2760588)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2007 (KB2760583)

The computers run Windows XP SP3 + Office 2007 SP3 with patches up to September 2013. When shutting down the PCs, the above 3 updates reinstall. The next day, they re-detected again and reinstalled when users shut down their PC. This affects multiple computers, not just one.

I have another computer running Windows 7 64-bit with Office 2003 SP3 (both OS and Office patches are up to date) and Office compatibility pack. This computer keeps reinstalling the following patches:

Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB2810048)
Security Update for Microsoft Office 2007 suites (KB2760411)
Security Update for Microsoft Office 2007 suites (KB2760588)

Answers

  • The faulty updates mentioned in the original post were revised and re-published on Friday September 13, 2013. They are now working as expected. All XP/7 machines now stop redetecting/reinstalling the updates.

  • This is a known problem - many of the September 10, 2013 updates are faulty. For the moment, I'd hide the updates - this can be done on the Microsoft Update site ( Windows XP) / Windows Update application (Windows 7). Right-click an update and select Hide Update from the context menu.

  • I support many Windows XP/7 machines at the office. Don't want to manually touch each one of them to hide the bad updates. If I UNapprove the faulty updates on my WSUS machine, I wonder if that will stop the clients from detecting them. I sure hope so.

UPDATE (temporary workaround for WSUS users):

Change the approval status to Not Approved. The client machines will stop nagging you to install those faulty updates.
