LiteTouch Win7 x86 deployment troubles - Windows could not collect information for [OSImage]

    Question

  • Hi folks,

I've been deploying Win7 x64 via LiteTouch for a few months now without at trouble.  I've decided to try make my x86 Win7 build available this way as well.  However, during the LiteTouch deployment, right after the ZTIDiskpart finishes successfully I get an error stating "Windows could not collect information for [OSImage]...".  I've never had this while deploying x64, so I'm at a loss as to where I've gone wrong.  Some more back ground info:

The same x86 WIM is being deployed via WDS without a problem so this seems to be isolated to LiteTouch deployment method.

This image was recently created and is Win7 x86 SP1.  I created my x64 SP1 image at the same time and it works perfectly.

My deployment share settings are setup to provide credentials for accessing the deployment share automatically through the Deployment Share Properties --> Rules --> Bootstrap.ini.

The LiteTouch logs aren't really shedding any light on the subject either.  Though I lack experience with regards to deciphering them, so perhaps they could be of help.  If it would help if I posted them just let me know which ones are appropriate to post.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

    Andy

  • Error 31 = ERROR_GEN_FAILURE

WHenever you have errors in setup, investigate the panther logs, look at SetupAct.log.

  • Could you post the bdd.log from \minint\smsosd\osdlogs folder?

  • Did you add the "Setup Files" when importing the .WIM into MDT?  It seems from the error that its having issues applying the image, which is applied using the setup.exe from the Windows 7 Source Files.  Can you try re-importing the .WIM and ensure you specify to add the Setup Files from the Win 7 x86 Install DVD.

  • Vik Singh - I've changed some of the data (domain, server name, and such) for the sake of anonymity, but you can find my BDD.LOG below (split into two URL's).

Brian Gonzalez - Yes, I used the same source media for setup files during the WIM import process in MDT as I did to build the image.  I will try to reimport the WIM and ensure I'm pointing to the correct x86 media and post back with the results.

Thanks for your assistance folks, it's really appreciated.Andy

  • Had a quick peek at the logs - I dont see it go beyond Diskpart at all.

When you started this post you mentioned about ""Windows could not collect information for [OSImage]." - I dont see this in the logs? Can you paste this piece?

Typically, it should start copying scripts onto the local machine and it does not.

Can you paste the litetouch.log as well?

Andy - Personally, I would create a new Deployment share and reload the OS, drivers, create a new TS, edit the rules and test.

  • Hi Vik,

I'm sorry, I hadn't finished the LiteTouch process.  Once I formally pressed the "OK" when the TS failed it produced more in the BDD.LOG.  I've posted the extra snippet from the end of the BDD.LOG file here:

The LiteTouch.log can be found here:

I can appreciate your suggestion to create a new Deployment share, and I may try that.  For now I'll see if these most recent logs tip you off.

    Thanks again,

    Andy

  • Andy,

We get this <![LOG[ZTI ERROR - Non-zero return code by LiteTouch, rc = -2147467259  0x80004005]LOG]!><

Now this could be because of many reasons. Before I start guessing - Could you send the ZTIGather.log?

  • Andy,

Does the specified Operating System Image file mentioned in the task sequence physically exist?

You should have the captured wim file in operating systems and the Windows 7 source files as well. The source files should have the setup files, boot.wim, install.wim

If all of the above are correct. I would personally, build a new deployment share. Load the OS once again, build new TS.

This is what I can suggest for now.

  • I am pretty much having the same issue here in regards to the error you get...

I had the "empty task sequence" and after fiddling with it and reading the internet, i was able to get past it, bascially I added the folloing:

In my deployment shares Properties I have: UNC path: \\server\wds$\Testing - I had to add a "\" at the end of Testing

    Then in my bootstrap.ini I had :
    [Settings]
    Priority=Default

    [Default]
    DeployRoot=\\server\wds$\Testing

Again I had to add a "\" at the end of Testing

This got me past my empty task sequence, but then gave me an error just like the one in this thread.

The screen that pops up has the following:

    Setup failed applying image \\server\wds$\Testing\\Operating Systems\Windows 7 Pro x64 Default Image\Sources\install.wim, rc = 31
    Basically the exact same error...

Now I notice there is a double slash after Testing, which I don't think belongs there, but if I don't put it in, then I get an empty task sequence.

I am not sure if anyone will see this post, or maybe have an idea how to help me out... but it is frustrating. I even tried importing a new image into MDT, and still the same error.

    Thanks
