Which version of PowerPivot should I install for Microsoft Excel 2010?

    Question

  • I saw that there are 2 versions of PowerPivot for Microsoft Excel 2010:

    • Sql Server 2012 SP1
    • Sql Server 2008 R2

Which version should I install? I didn't see the database versions as part of "System Requirements". I assume the main difference is that I would only be able to use sql server 2012 as a data source with the Sql Server 2012 version?

Also, does the version matter when trying to integrate with Sharepoint 2010, or does this only matter for the "PowerPivot for Sharepoint" component?

Answers

  • PowerPivot is related to SQL Server Versions as the engine that works behind PowerPivot is Analysis Services

regarding your question you should go for SQL Server 2012 SP1 as it is the most current Version of PowerPivot (for Excel 2010)

in Terms of datasources there is no difference, you could query a SQL Server 2012 also with the PowerPivot Version 2008R2, but it does not make any sense to use 2008R2 Version of PowerPivot anymore
