setup bootstrapper has stopped working Office PP 2013

    Question

  • I have downloaded the Office Pro Plus 2013 ISO from our licensing site. The ISO is good as i was able to install the suite on a 2008R2 XenApp 6.5 server.

However every time i try to install it on my windows 7 SP1 64bit PC i get the error

"Microsoft Setup Bootstrapper has stopped working"

This is in the event viewer:

    Fault bucket 3355664129, type 5
    Event Name: OfficeClassicSetup
    Response: Not available

I have done some Google searching and tried all the suggestions.

Ran all windows updates. Uninstalled Office 2010. Burned the ISO to CD and tried.

2013 has never been on my computer before as far as im aware. I had someone else try in the office on their laptop with the same results....

    Any thoughts?

  • We ran into this same issue. In our case we traced it down to the Citrix Virtual Desktop Agent Core Services. If this is installed the Office 2013 setup.exe will not run. Uninstall the Citrix agent and setup.exe works fine.

  • The above error description doesn't tell much exception that the Setup Boot Strapper stopped working. You can have a look at the event viewer in the OS and see whether you see more related logs or not.

In the meantime, you can try the following:

If you have any older Office suites(say, Office 2007), then I would recommend you to try the Fixit utility available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218 or the other methods in it and uninstall Office suite.

If you have installed any previous versions of Office 2013, then you can try the following article http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/repair-or-remove-office-HA010357402.aspx to try remove/repair it as specified in it. Also you can have a look at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/install-or-remove-individual-office-programs-and-components-HA010354261.aspx.

  • Hi Sean,

Thank you for the log snippet.

I know that you mentioned that the same ISO worked on a different machine and failed on another.  Have you tried a new download from the Volume License site to see if you get the same error on the Win7 machines?

    1. You mentioned that you used the FixIts to remove a previous version of Office.  I would suggest that you remove any and all versions of Office and then try the install of 2013 again.  Note - Please make sure that you have Office media and product keys before removing.

You can obtain a script named Offscrub.vbs that will run similar to the FixIts, but this will allow you to remove any and all Office programs, whether it be an Office suite or a standalone product (Visio, Project).  Here is further information.

How to obtain and use Offscrub to automate the uninstallation of Office products:

    Office 2010:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

    2. The install could be failing due to a 3rd party program or software running on these machines and interfering with the install of Office 2013.  Have you tried disabling anti-virus software and any other 3rd party program before attempting the install?
    3. Are these new installs of Windows 7?  If not, do you receive the same error on a brand new machine\build of Windows 7?  Could be possible that there is some OS corruption on these machines.  If that is the case, then you may need to do an in-place upgrade of Windows 7 in order to install 2013:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 & Windows Server 2008 R2
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2255099

    4. Can you install any Office (2007, 2010, etc) products on these machines?

    Thank you.

  • I have tried uninstalling all office products (office, Visio, project, Lync) this did not help. I also tried disabling my AV (Symantec endpoint protection 12.1.1) this did not help either.

I used the same install Media on a windows 2008R2 server, that had Office 2010 already installed and it worked fine. Besides MS says you should be able to install both side by side now.

I am unable to repair install the OS and all the windows 7 systems i have tried are our companies gold image.

I have no issue re installing any of the office 2010 products.

The 2013 install fails before i even get a chance to chose to install or customize... or even accept the user agreement.

There are no wierd or funky GPO's that i can find that would cause this either.

On a side note i also get the same issue when trying to install Visio 2013 standard, tried the same suggested solutions with no success.

  • Hi Sean,

    Thanks.

Have you tried installing Office 2013 on a Win7 machine outside of the gold image that you are using?  If not, please try this to see if this issue is isolated to the image as you have been able to install on other machines without issue.  If the issue is with the image, then a repair install would be a next step or you could also try running system file checker (SFC /SCANNOW):

Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

Can you uninstall Symantec Endpoint Protection and try the install again?

    Thank you.

  • uninstalling didn't help and nothing showed up in the sfc.

Installing on a different windows 7 that isn't our gold image works... so there is something up with our image but what...

  • I'm seeing the same error—setup bootstrapper has stopped working—trying to install Office 2013 Pro+ 64-bit on a 64-bit Windows 8 laptop (Dell Studio w/8GB RAM) that was upgraded to Win 8 from Windows 7 (64-bit). I removed the Office 2010 installation (also 64-bit) without incident, but that did not have any effect on the Office 2013 installation failure.

I've tried installing from both the dual (32-/64-bit) ISO and the 64-bit version with the same results.

  • Hi Sean,

Apologies about the delay in my response.

On one of your gold images, please uninstall Office 2010 and then go through and delete\rename the registry keys and folders listed in KB290301 (Resolution Section - Remove Microsoft Office 2010 suites manually) to do a clean uninstall of Office 2010:

Remove any remaining 2010 Microsoft Office installation folders.

    1.Click Start.
2.Click All Programs, and then open the Accessories folder (skip this step in Windows XP).
3.Click Run, and then click in the Open box.
4.Type %CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared, and then click OK.
Note On a computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or Vista, type %CommonProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Shared, and then click OK.

5.If the following folders are present, delete them:

    ◦Office14
    ◦Source Engine

    6.Click Start.
7.Click All Programs, and then open the Accessories folder (skip this step in Windows XP).
8.Click Run, and then click in the Open box.
9.Type %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office, and then click OK.
Note On a computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or Vista, type %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office, and then click OK.

    10.Delete the Office14 folder.

Locate and then delete the Office 2010 registry subkeys if they are present.

  • Thanks Andy,

but this did not work either.... The thing is the startup.exe isn't even getting to the point of running so i dont know why uninstalling older office products would matter.

I guess ill just have to stay with 2010, until this issue gets fixed or someone finds a work around.

  • Hi Sean,

    Thank you for the update.

Can you provide me with the full details of the application crash event from Event Viewer | Windows Logs | Application when running setup.exe?

Or is what you have in the initial post the event?

    Thank you.

Please let me know how i can get this to work. Going to install Office 2010 in the meantime until the problem is identified and fixed.

    Thanks

  • Hi Vinoth and Sean,

If you right-click on Setup.exe (for Office 2013) and select Run As Administrator, do you get the same error?

In order to determine what is causing this issue we will need to look at a machine that is able to reproduce this error.  Would one of you be willing to open a support case so we can troubleshoot and research further?

You can open a support case by going here:

    Thank you.

  • Hello Sean,

I am wondering if you have the Task Scheduler disabled on your Windows 7?  Could you please ensure that it is running by opening an Administrative Command Prompt and running the command-line:

    net start schedule

If the Task Scheduler service starts successfully then attempt to install Office 2013 once again.

    Hope this helps,

  • Hi JalalB,

my Task Scheduler service is running. Its configured for automatic start and shows as started in the services console. The command you suggested also shows the scheduler as running

  • Sean,

Thanks for checking the Task Scheduler.  Could you please also check the following registry key:

    32-Bit OS: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Command Processor

    64-Bit OS: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Command Processor

and confirm that the following default values are set.  If there are any customizations to it, please export the settings to save them and set them to the default value as below.  Then try installing Office again.

  • I am running a 64 bit OS, but i checked locations for both and they are set as shown in your screenshot.

  • Same here. I checked the task scheduler and the registry here and they are the same as you mentioned but still no help. I also tried the Microsoft support route and didn't yield any result. They escalated my case to the technical support team but they didn't get back to me at all. So not sure how to proceed at this point.

    Thanks

  • Sean,

This issue appears to require advance troubleshooting, therefore, I request that you to open a support case.  Just browse to Microsoft Support, click on ‘Get LiveHelp’ and then the Windows icon. You will answer a few questions, and your request will be setup for a callback.

    Thanks!

  • We ran into this same issue. In our case we traced it down to the Citrix Virtual Desktop Agent Core Services. If this is installed the Office 2013 setup.exe will not run. Uninstall the Citrix agent and setup.exe works fine.

  • Please let me know how to uninstall the citrix agent, I don't even know if I have one but I have been trying to install Ms office 2013 for 2 days and nothing is working. Kindly bear in mind that I am a humble layman and most of this is greek to me, please walk me through the process.

  • Uninstalling VMware Tools did it for me. It is an agent that runs on a virtual machine.

I was beating my head against the wall. We started using Citrix a couple of month sago and had no issue with Office 2010. After I uninstalled Citrix, it then Office 2013 installed fine!

Looked many places, but never saw the clue. For others I would say to look for other Terminal server/remote app software.
