FAILURE ( 9704 ): USMT 4 cannot be used with destination OS 6.2.9200.16384

    Question

  • Upgraded my build server today (Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1) with MDT 2012 Update 1 and Windows ADK, updated the deployment share, checked in Windows 8 Enterprise x64 and created a new Standard Client Task Sequence for Windows 8 deployment.  Did not modify the task sequence in any way after it was created, just wanted to run a simple sysprep & capture to verify the infrastructure before customizing anything.  But the task sequence is failing during User State Restore with the following in the ZTIUserState.log file:

    Property restore is now =  ZTIUserState 8/18/2012 12:15:27 AM 0 (0x0000)
    Microsoft Deployment Toolkit version: 6.1.2369.0 ZTIUserState 8/18/2012 12:15:27 AM 0 (0x0000)
The task sequencer log is located at C:\Users\ADMINI~1\AppData\Local\Temp\SMSTSLog\SMSTS.LOG.  For task sequence failures, please consult this log. ZTIUserState 8/18/2012 12:15:27 AM 0 (0x0000)
TargetOS is the current SystemDrive ZTIUserState 8/18/2012 12:15:27 AM 0 (0x0000)
    Checking for USMT Files in \\USEUTSNT24\distribution$\Tools\X64 ZTIUserState 8/18/2012 12:15:27 AM 0 (0x0000)
    Found USMT 4 executables. Using USMT 4 ZTIUserState 8/18/2012 12:15:27 AM 0 (0x0000)
    FAILURE ( 9704 ): USMT 4 cannot be used with destination OS 6.2.9200.16384 ZTIUserState 8/18/2012 12:15:27 AM 0 (0x0000)

Anybody got a clue?  I did not have this issue with Win8CP and the beta MDT.

  • Make sure you have the USMT5 folder under <DeploymentShare>\Tools\x64\USMT5 and <DeploymentShare>\Tools\x86\USMT5

  • So I ran the TS again after posting here and went to bed.  Woke up to find it had completed successfully.  Doing the same thing over and expecting different results--isn't that the definition of insanity?  Glad it worked, but wish I knew what changed.

  • Where would the adventure be without it? Glad it worked for you.

  • The task sequence seems to tink it need to capture and restore user data with USMT. (when running sequence over an existing w8 installation) I disabled those steps in my sequence and got rid of the errors forever.

  • i think you need USMT 5 for windows 8.

it is basicly saying USMT 4 cannot be used with windows 8.

like frank mentioned above Make sure you have the USMT5 folder under <DeploymentShare>\Tools\x64\USMT5 and <DeploymentShare>\Tools\x86\USMT5

  • Assuming you have the Windows ADK installed as well, I believe MDT will use USMT 4 in Windows XP (scanstate) and will use USMT 5 (loadstate) in Windows 8. If you're using custom XML files, those files will need to exist in the appropriate USMT 4 and USMT 5 directories.
