Installed Windows8-RT-KB2849636-x64 No Windows 8.1 Preview after reboot

    Question

  • I have cross posted this over on answers.microsoft.com but does anyone over know if there is a limitation on installing this on the VL version of Windows 8 Pro? I've also been talking with a coworker who has a windows 8 pro and rt tablet and he said that after installing the patch (in subject) that he then went to the store and it started updating his tablet. I'm not seeing this same behavior on my laptop.

My laptop is a Dell Latitude e6250 or something, I'm running Windows 8 Pro that I've downloaded from the VLSC site. The laptop has 8gb of ram, plenty of disk space, and lots of cpu.

  • Same here. I installed the update on the VL version of Windows 8 Pro, but I never got prompted to install the Preview from the Store. Basically I installed the update, rebooted, and got... nothing.

  • Just verified, looks like VL versions don't work with the preview. One of the guys I work with brought his personal laptop in that had a retail version of Windows 8 Pro installed. He downloaded the .msu rebooted, and went to the windows store, and there was a tile that said try out the preview.

So I'm thinking that perhaps I'll try that .iso when it's available tomorrow.

    sigh...

  • MS writes it here that VL is not supported:

Is there a way I can prevent my users from installing the Windows 8.1 Preview from the Windows Store?
Users will only see the Windows 8.1 Preview in the Windows Store if they manually install a necessary Windows update (available from the Windows 8.1 Preview website) and have a retail- or OEM-activated version of Windows 8.  Volume activated computers will not be offered the update.
