Can not install updates on windows server 2008

    Question

  • End Goal is to upgrade server from 2008 x64 to 2008R2 then to 2012.  But i am having trouble getting any updates to install and system takes up to 2 hours to reboot.

Running Windows Server 2008 SP2 and has our Exchange 2010 server install on it.

Updates are supplied by a WSUS server.

    Error messages are as followes

Event 20 - Windows Updated Clients failed with code 0x800719e4 (which means log file is full, not sure which one)

Event 4375 Servicing - Failed to complete of setting package to stage

Event 7023 Service Control Manager Eventlog Provider - Log space exhausted

The updates are download and install, then the system ask for reboot, the system stalls generally on stage 2 of 3

System reverts back  then finally allows me to long on. Been working on this problem for weeks now, and not having any luck.

    Thanks,

  • I believe I have fix the problem.  I found this solution a couple of times but it was for Vista, and was afraid to try it.  But so far i have been able to install about 20 updates successfully.

    Log space is exhausted.

The transaction logs for Windows Update may be in an inconsistent state.
You can clear them by clicking the Start orb.
In the Start Search field type in cmd
    Right
click cmd.exe and choose 'Run as administrator'. Agree to the UAC prompt.

At the prompt, type in the below exactly as written, including the spaces, pushing Enter after eachcommand

    cd /d %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine
    attrib -s -h *
    del *.blf
    del *.regtrans-ms
