Lync onsite and UM hosted. I think I have problem with DNS records

    Question

  • New installation.  The client says that they can reach their voicemail externally, but it would time out if they try to do it internally.

Any ideas where to start troubleshooting?

    Thank you. Eric.

  • Check this blog post for reference http://www.lynclog.com/2012/02/lync-2010-on-prem-cloud-um-integration.html. If you cannot nail the reason for failure, let me know and we can fix it after hours.

Drago, that article talks about "Remote PowerShell". What is this?

Eason, the article that you offer me for integration UM and Lync when they are onsite.  This is not my scenario.

    Thank you.

    Thank you. Eric.

  • Actually, since you are saying clients can retrieve VM from Public internet, the configuration is completed correctly and yet, you are probably missing Autodiscover records in the internal DNS. Is the domain namespace same? This is - your AD domain is contoso.com and the on-prem tennant contoso.com as well?

  • Lync is configured as contoso.com, but internal domain is domain.local.

    Thank you.

    Thank you. Eric.

  • Unfortunately no. We started. We checked DNS records. Everything looked good. After that Drago was called to emergency.

I compared client logs when I am outside of the firewall and it works with the call that fails internally. I found that call to UM fails with the following: Call failed to establish due to a media connectivity failure when both endpoints are internal.

Why does it say "both endpoints are internal"? UM is hosted and the call should try to reach external UM.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you. Eric.

  • Does your Edge server have static routes to the internal client networks using the Edge internal NIC? Firewall blocking ports between the Edge internal NIC and internal clients?

  • Yes, I have routes configured and firewall is off on the Edge server. There is no firewall between Edge and Lync FE servers.

    Thank you.

    Thank you. Eric.

  • I am sure Eric will explain in greater details, but the issue was resolved by applying the old rule "If something related to external connectivity does not work - check Firewall or DNS first".

It was missconfiguration of the firewall (NAT-ing edge's external IP) that Eric found and corrected..

  • Outbound traffic from Edge server was not forwarded through sip.domain.com IP address. The logs on Microsoft UM showed us that they had messages coming from the main IP address of the firewall.

I hope I was able to explain.

    Thank you. Eric.

  • NAT wasn't bidirectional
