SBS 2008 - Main Disk Failure

    General discussion

  • Hi

I have a SBS 2008 that the main system disk has failed, now i have restored a back up on to new HDD but having done this the server and exchange appear to be working, ie i can send and receive emails and access shared folders, BUT when i log onto the server and use the SBS console and look at the users section there are NO users, likewise if i enter the exchange management console it says the domain xxxx.local either does not exist or is unavailable. Couild anyone explain this/what it is i have done wrong...

The only thing i am thinking of doing is a complete fresh install of the SBS system and start again from fresh, but i then have the headache of transferring my exchange mailbox data to the new set up as this was originally kept on another disk, how can i do this ????

  • Sounds like an excellent lesson in why running a server without RAID protection is suicidal.

Do the users should up in AD U&C ? (start, run, dsa.msc). And is DNS running okay, and your NIC has the local IP as the sole DNS server? YOur NIC should NOT have your router as the DNS.

No users show up when i run dsa.msc. It shows Naming information cannot be found. The DNS server is the IP of the Server on the NIC. I have noticed though if i reboot the server the NIC doesn't remember the gateway address, so i have to manually have to add it. What am i to do next ?? i may just start a fresh and restore in pieces.

  • Hi Mike

Losing the gateway address is fairly common issue, with a solution.

  • what happens when you open a command prompt and type nslookup domain.local

Make sure you use your domain.

Is the IPAddress the correct one?

Are all your services started properly?

    nslookup produces the following:

    Server:  UnKnown
    Address:  fe80::d34d:ce42:abe0:6025

*** UnKnown can't find swsa.local: No response from server

And i think all necessary services are started..

where has the domain gone ???

But exchange is still recieving emails etc.

  • Your DNS is "borked" .  Restart the DNS server service.

    then try

    nslookup

    server 127.0.0.1

    swsa.local

  • No good, Error 1222

It cannot find the domain at all.

Doing a fresh install now, will post results when completed.
