SQL Server Express intermittent installation issue

    Question

  • Have been seeing this error for several months trying to duplicate and troubleshoot. SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Express being installed on Windows 7 (x86 or x64) Professional, various processors, various execution environments (VM and non-VM). Yesterday duplicated on x86 Win7 Pro VM clean install (installed Win7 Pro, loaded all updates except .NET 4.5, and installed my application). App installer copies .NET 4, Visual Studio 2010 C++ run-time, and then SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2. Below is portion of detail.txt from setup failure log:

This issue seems to be documented in below support article

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976899

The details.txt was not complete but I found out that you are using TF T4022 -T4010 -T3659 -T3610 -T902. are these really required. out of which 4010 would not allow you to  log on to SQL server using TCP/IP and named pipes. And I guess that is why you got Sqlexception error 2

For further analysis if you want can you please post summary.txt file and complete details.txt file on skydrive

  • Here are the parameters used with the SQL Server Express installer EXE (both x86 and x64):

    -----------------------------------

    /q /hideconsole /action=Install /features=SQL /instancename=SQLEXPRESS /enableranu=1 /sqlsvcaccount="NT Authority\Network Service" /AddCurrentUserAsSqlAdmin /skiprules=RebootRequiredCheck /IAcceptSQLServerLicenseTerms

    -----------------------------------

I presume that TCP/IP is not enabled by default for Express installs. I THINK that named pipe should be enabled.

  • Hello,

Could you please verify the WMI service is started? If it is started, could you try to verify the WMI is consistent using the following utility?

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7684

Could you try to install using another Windows account? Use another Windows account with administrative privileges to login to that computer and install SQL Server using that Windows account.

Please disable any antivirus/security software while installing SQL Server.

Some of the errors exposed on the log are related to WMI and antivirus software activity, based on my experience.

    Hope this helps.

  • This is a very clean VM built with Win7 and nothing else, specifically for this test.

WMI does appear to be running (see picture):

    WMIDiag found no inconsistent repositories:

    # of   machines w/ consistent WMI repository among tested 1 100.00%

The only security software running is Windows Defender. Since it's not a reasonable request to shut down Defender on my user's machine, I'm reluctant to do so here. Remember that this is an intermittent problem; security software seems an unlikely cause.

The installing user account is an administrator (and the only account existing on the VM). I've repeated this install four times, starting with a saved snapshot each time, and it has failed once.

  • Hello,

I have never seen this behavior on a Virtual PC virtual machine. Can you try virtual PC? It is free. Are you using any third party software for virtualization like VMWare or VirtualBox?

    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks,

I'm using VMware workstation although I've used all three in the last six months. VMware is a significant upgrade over either of the others.

If QA reports are accurate, this problem has occurred on both VMware and Virtual PC.

While I might be able to run a Virtual PC duplication case, I'd have to repeat it several times to prove that it doesn't work (or that it does). We've seen this in the field in non-VM installs also so I'm reluctant to attribute the problem to the virtualization unless the logged error somehow indicates that as root cause. Based on what I read there it seems to be a time-out or similar problem during a server connection operation, no?

Note the slightly-more-than-1 minute delta between the attempt to connect script and generation of the error. Could be no ability to create named-pipe connection, I guess. Not sure what would cause named pipe problems in setup or server other than bugs.

  • Hi,

You did not tell me why you use so many trace flags ? Also did you referred to MS link posted by me in first reply ?

  • I have no idea why so many trace flags are active; that's what I presume MS sets when you run the SQL Server 2008 R2 Express SP2 install. Other than the parameters indicated I'm not setting anything else (intentionally).

I'm still reviewing whether the indicated link for 2008 R2 SP1 should affect SP2 (which I'm using) or what can be done, if so. The description matches well but I'd expect that fixes applied to SP1 after release should be included in SP2. Will try some suggestions to help eliminate or confirm.

  • Repeating the install is difficult with SQL Server embedded in my product install. Rerunning that install detects SQL Server installed and skips reinstall. In fact server is installed and running but won't accept connections from User Instance clients (like my application). Uninstalling SQL Server and all of its subcomponents allows product install to successfully install SQL Server. I'm not sure what that proves however, since the problem is intermittent.

Comparing the detail.txt files; perhaps it will help direct our investigation...
