Fatal error during installation of ASP.NET MVC 3: Exe installer does not provide a log file name

    Question

  •  I am trying to install the ASP.NET MVC 3 framework on my Windows 7 machine.

I got the version I’m trying to install from the download page at Microsoft.com: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=4211

I have the following .NET Framework 4 patches installed:

    • Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Extended (KB2468871)
    • Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Extended (KB2487367)
    • Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Extended (KB2656351)
    • Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile (KB2446708)
    • Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile (KB2468871)
    • Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile (KB2478663)
    • Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile (KB2518870)
    • Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile (KB2539636)
    • Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile (KB2572078)
    • Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile (KB2633870)
    • Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile (KB2656351)

    As well as:

    • Microsoft Silverlight 5.0.61118.0
    • Microsoft Silverlight Developer Package 5.0.61118.0
    • Service Pack 1 for SQL Server 2008 (KB968369)
    • Service Pack 1 for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Browser (KB968369)
    • Hotfix for Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Professional – ENU (KB2615527)

I also have a fully licensed copy of Visual Studio 2008 installed.

I installed the trial copy of Visual Studio 2010 Professional using the web installer from http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=2890 and copied the source files for my team’s projects. When opening the .csproj file, Visual Studio alerted me that some of the projects were not loaded correctly, and the errors pointed to the need to install Silverlight 5 tools. I went to http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/confirmation.aspx?id=28358 which had a prerequisite of installing VS 2010 SP1.

After installing all of the above, I went to load the C# project again. This time, Visual Studio gave me a different error that the project file for one of the projects cannot be opened – the project type is not supported by this installation. One of my colleagues advised me that what I needed in this case was to install ASP.NET MVC 3 from http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=4211

When I attempted to run this installation, however, it consistently fails to complete. The log file indicates that the exe installer does not provide a log file name.

Here is the final section of the log file:

I double-checked my system requirements, performed a repair of ASP.NET 4 (just in case), stopped the program compatibility assistant service, disabled my antivirus software, and attempted the installation of ASP.NET 4.0 MVC 3 again – but came to the exact same failure and logged error.

What else can be done to get the MVC framework to successfully install?
