Answered Transport Service Won't Start

I have just migrated from Exchange 2003 to 2010.  The 2003 server hasn't been completley decommissioned yet.  I have installed Forefront Protection for Exchange 2010. All services start except the Microsoft Exchange Transport Service and the Forefront Registration Service (A dependancy for the Transport Service) both will not start.  I checked all of the dependancies for the Registration service and found that they were all running and were able to be restarted.  At this poing i've uninstalled Forefront and re-installed making sure that the WinHTTP service was enabled and that all firewalls were disabled (based on advice from other forums).  I have still been unable to install forefront and have exchange run okay.  Any ideas on why this is happening and ways I can fix it?

    Hey ryan

    Thanks for the post ,

Please check for permissions on the exchange server  :

The user who runs the FF Installation need administration permissions on the exchange server .

Check also for events and right it down .

    thanks .

I'd be glad to answer any question

    Hi,

the registration service will terminate automatically after it has been startet so there is no need to worry about that.

Are there any entries in the eventlogs why the transport service won't start?

    Greetings

    Christian

This seems to be all i can find so far.

    Service Control Manager

    Event ID: 7001

The Microsoft Exchange Transport service depends on the Microsoft Forefront Server Protection for Exchange Registration Service service which failed to start because of the following error:

The dependency service or group failed to start.

    Hi,

have you installed FPE from the latest rollup? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2619883/en-us

Next thing you can do is to change the start mode of the Transport service from "automatic" to "automatic delayed start".

    Greetings

    Hi,

    Thank you for the post.

When you uninstalled Forefront, did you also delete the Forefront directories that were created? Uninstallation from Add/Remove does not automatically delete the Forefront directories.

I had Rollup 3 installed,  I will try again tonight with rollup 4.  I've double checked permissions and they seem correct.  MS Transport Service is already set to automatic.  I renamed the old installation directories once i uninstalled and that didn't seem to help either.  I'll attempt to install again tonight and post my results in the morning.  In the meantime, if anyone has any other suggestions I would greatly appreciate them.

    Hi Ryan,

set the transport service to "automatic delayed start" not only "automatic".
