TMG and WPAD.dat issues

I am trying to implement the Automated Proxy Detection System for TMG, unfortunately i am not getting any ware. I have a TMG server running SP2 and it is working fine as a proxy server, however due to laptops going home i am unable to state a proxy server with IE using GP anymore and need the WPAD system to replace this. When I try enable this i am getting a very strange issue that seems undocumented, when i enable the "Auto Discovery" function within TMG using port 80 everything applies fine. After the sync I try and goto http://proxy/wpad.dat and i get "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" if I goto http://proxy/wspad.dat i get a 1.36kb file with data in it. At this point I checked that nothing was using port 80 by using the "netsh http show service state" and confirmed noting else was using port 80. I then checked TMG and insured there was no port mapping or web listeners, so it then though to check if it is ports I changed the "Auto Discovery" port to 8081 and tried to browse to http://proxy:8081/wpad.dat and was prompted to download a 8kb file. I am also able to download wpad.dat from http://proxy:8080/ which is the proxy port. If someone could give me a starter of where to look that will be great, i have been working on this issue for a long time now and really want to solve it as it will vastly improve user experience for mobile laptops.
Regards,
Stuart

Hi Stuart,
I have recently come across this issue on TMG with SP2. It took me a while to locate the culprit :)
I had setup a web listener for testing purposes, which used port 80, as soon as this web listener was disabled, I was once again able to browse to http://proxy/wdap.dat
In this particular case though I had do do some testing with that web listener on port 80, so I had to configure the TMG server to use another WPAD broadcast port and then use DHCP to configure the proxy server on client computers.
In short my guess would be a web listener published on port 80 on the internal interface of the TMG server.

Hi,
Thank you for the post.
You may check the WPAD settings as per this link: http://www.isaserver.org/tutorials/Configuring-Web-Proxy-Automatic-Discovery-WPAD-Forefront-Threat-Management-Gateway-TMG-2010.html
