Beantwortet Previous Update Not Completed

I downloaded MBSA 2.2 on an XP Pro xp3 which as far as I knew, was completely up to date with security updates.

MBSA, however, reports under Administrative Vulnerabilities that "Incomplete Updates. A previous software update installation was not completed. You must restart the computer to complete the installation."

Numerous restarts have not convinced MBSA that everything that should have been installed has been installed, even though in the Security Update Scan Results section, everything is green and marked as "No security updates are missing."  Microsoft Update also reports nothing other than a hidden update (see below) is available.

Any suggestions on what this "error" refers to and how to make it go away?

In the interest of full disclosure, I have hidden one update: Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474).  I thought, however, that "hiding" an update should completely prevent the update from being downloaded, rather than downloading the file and leaving it stuck in queue someplace on the computer.

Thank you for posting in the MBSA forum and I'm sorry you're seeing this issue.

This is a bug in MBSA we've never been able to duplicate within Microsoft to identify and fix.  It's possible that there is a residual (leftover) value in one of these two registry locations:

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\UpdateExeVolatile

Note: This key might not exist if there are no pending EXE updates

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations

Note: This key might not exist if there are no pending filename operations needed after the reboot

Could you check these locations and report back whether there is a value in either one of these registry keys?  If tneither of these lcoations contains a residual value - and removing it doesn't resovle the issue, you've stumped us.  I'm sorry I can't resovle this for you - but I hope one of these keys will help.

You could also review http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832475 to see if that helps as well.

    Thanks for responding so quickly.

Unfortunately, neither of those keys exists on my system.

I'm not going to lose any sleep over this.  As far as I'm concerned, if Microsoft Update isn't offering me any critical updates, I'm going to assume that all critical updates have been installed.

You Bet.  But I wish I could solve it for you.  It seems this elusive MBSA bug continues to evade us.

In the end, if youv'e rebooted the PC, you should have no incomplete updates.  If MBSA says you do, it's wrong (and is an instance of the aforementioned bug).  Thanks!

"This is a bug in MBSA we've never been able to duplicate within Microsoft to identify and fix."

    Hi Doug,

This issue seems to be mostly replicated from an error within Logitech Deluxe communicate Quick cam 1.1 software also know as LWS, Installing this software will give the same results in MBSA pending restarts with the Hkey you provided. Also found by selecting the "show me how to correct this" option in MBSA.

Issue does not fix after completing tasks of re-starting and clean install of LWS software. With no clear knowledge if it's a MBSA or an LWS issue, i thought i would send you the program/software relating to my system which caused the same issue of pending restart failure. In case further development was needed to test the MBSA program and to provide an update/fix/workaround solution to MBSA which might also work for others in the future with similar issue but maybe relating to another program. For MBSA 2.3?

I sent the pending file to Logitech and had to have my product replaced, not sure if admission of guilt or good service, maybe both.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks, Dark.  I've added this to try internally to reproduce the issue.  Thanks for the tip!
