We scanning a remote Windows XP Pro SP3 machine remotely we are getting the following error message:

    Issue:  Security Updates
        Score:  Unable to scan
Result: An error occurred while scanning for security updates. (0x80070005)

We have updated the Windows Update Agent - but still cannot resolve this error message, does anyone have an suggestions on how to fix?

    Thanks in advanced

Thank you for posting in the MBSA forums.

This is likely a permissions issue with MBSA trying to connect via DCOM to the remote machine's Windows Update Agent (WUA client). You may want to run dcomcnfg.exe and go to the Default Properties tab.

On machines that are reporting this error (or they may be reporting "incomplete scan"), check to see whether the "Enable Distributed COM on this computer" check box is unchecked. If so, please check it and try again.

If that does not resolve the issue, consider the steps in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968003

Finally, you can also try http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951016.

If none of these resolve your issue, you may want to contact Customer Support Services (CSS) – which should be able to provide support at no charge since MBSA is a security tool and there are no charges for support of security updates and tools.

    I hope that helps…
