can not open microsoft word on imac

i purchased an new imac in september, along with microsoft word. for some reason this afternoon, word has stopped working, and when there is an attempt to open the program, i get the following message ' the application microsoft work can't be opened.' followed by the number 1712.
do i need to reload the program? will i loose material if i do?
what should i do?
please help!!!
