Eagerly awaiting an upgrade. We are using Forefront exclusively and having several problems with it. MOM 2005 not communicating back to the server, etc. We are hoping to just limp along until we can upgrade because we are a small shop and don't have a lot of time to spare.

I wanted to download the latest version of Sterling and install it to test the client security and integration with windows firewall. When i go to the download I see Forefront for Sharepoint, For Exchange, and TMG. I am just interested in the console and client portion for my test. Where can i get this software.

I also the the preconfigure VHD but the evaluation software expires in Aug 2009 according to the read me.?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just installed Forefront Client Security. Configuring File Transfer Options for Live Messenger I'm wondering which .exe scans files for viruses. Is this FSysAgent.exe inside \client\agent? Can anybody confirm that?

Help, Need to Sell Stirling to my Boss

Situation is: We need a new Anti-Virus solution.
Problem: Theirs another tech that's selling to my boss that we should'nt go with Stirling (forefront) because it hasn't made its stand (proven itself) on the market yet and go with another solution. We've recently started hosting our exchange and sharepoint at Microsoft Online so i lose the arguments of having FF better protect those systems than another.
We do not use SCOM (not for long if i have my way :P) nor SCCM.

I need some points to sell to my boss why we should go with Stirling in November rather than any other solution. Are there some documents out there to help me out?
I've seen somewhere that Forefront is the best protection fo Vista but can't seem to find it anywhere anymore.

Stirling and SCCM 2007 Software Update Integration

I am designing our SCCM 2007 Software Update configuration. I would like to incorporate the future release of Stirling. The ASUP is configured to use port 8530. Stirling uses port 80. Can Stirling (server/client) be modified to use 8530 for the elements requiring WSUS?

Connetions get lost with Published DNS on W2k8 TMG

After time, connections get lost and published DNS rule doesn't work anymore after 1 or 2 days.

The connection looks like this: Internet--TMG--DNS.
The TMG & DNS are running on 2 uptodate windows 2008 servers.

There is nothing in the log files, this i find very strange.

If i disabled and enabled the rule it works again !!???

This is the Rule:
1.Non-web server protocol publishing rule
Name: "Publishing first DNS ns1.domain.com"
Server Ip Adress: "10.10.10.101"
Selected Protocol: "DNS Server"
Listen networks: "External"

Any help would be fine :)

I need ISA Server 2004. Ideally i want the trial but i cant find it anyway. after browsing the entire of microsoft's site and finding they dont have it anymore, i've looked on google and havent found a copy out there!!!

Can anyone shed some light to where i could find it?

Please, before you post, read this part : I want server 2004. Dont tell me about 2k6 or TMG, i want to start at the beggining as some small companies still use 2004. If you cant help, dont post. thank you!

Stirling and SCOM 2007

Does anyone know if Stirling will come with SCOM 2007 or are you requered to purchase a license seperately. On the same note if you already have a deployment of SCOM 2007 will you be able to use that instead of a seperate installation? Like the FCSMC it seems a little redunant to have two MOM clients on the same machine as well a two seperate MOM servers.

Stirling Installation problem

I am trying to install Stirling on a Windows 2003 Server but am running into an issue. I tried to run serversetup.exe on this server which has SCOM installed on it and it keeps telling me that I must be joined to the domain to continue with the install even though I am joined to the domain. I removed the machine from the domain, restarted, then added the machine to the domain again. I am logged in as a domain admin. The server I am logging into is not the domain controller. Has anyone encountered this problem before?

Stirling Client System Requirements (OS Version)

This article for FCS client software system requirements explicitly mentions editions of Windows, such as XP Home, Vista Business, Enterprise, Home, or Ultimate.

This Stirling article also goes into specific edition support as well, but only mentions Vista’s “Business” edition and also omits XP Home, Tablet, etc.

I understand tablet is just an expansion onto Professional, and I also understand the base Vista OS is consistent across the editions, but I am wondering why Stirling bothers to mention Business on its supported client list and none others. Is this a technical limitation? Should I infer a licensing shortcoming in non-mentioned versions?

Also I realize this is pre-release documentation and subject to change, but the precise level of detail in the first edition and the precise omission of the second just made me raise an eyebrow. Any feedback is welcome (especially from Microsoft). J

Clients will not report to Forefront Server

Howdy all;

I have setup a small test environment for Forefront.
Host: Server 2008 Standard x86 - Forefront ver. 1.0.1703.0
Clients: 2x WinXP Pro SP 2, 1x WinXP Pro SP 3 and 1 Windows 7 RC2.

All 4 test machines show up in WSUS, however; Forefront Host only shows 1 "managed computers".

The machine that is reporting is a WinXP Pro SP 2; the first of the test Clients; all clients post are not reporting to Forefront.

I am out of ideas and would like some help if possible.

guys, please help as am lost here, i have deployed internally the OCS and it works perfect, now i want to deploy it outside on interent allowing anonymous access, the problem that i dont have PUBLIC IP ADDRESS and NO domian. i use DYNDNS.

my internal domain : mydomain.dyndns.org

can i deploy it with edge server without public IP Address and External DNS, the fees for static public ip addrerss in my ISP is very very expensive? can i deploy external DNS if i dont have public ip address?

Experts , please advice me what should i do? what do i need to make it happen? am really stuck

Installation failed - SQL Server Collation

I´v set up a lab running on WinSrv 2008 X64 with 4 VM on Hyper-V (all WinSrv2008 X64 Ent ED).
FCS is not yet supported on Win2008, but still I tried for a couple of days before I gave up.
Now I´m trying to get Stirling working on mye lab...

Installation ends with the error: Failed to execute the SQL string, error detail: Unable to resolve collation conflict between SQL_Latin1_general and Danish_Norwegian etc etc etc...

Is there any way to make this work without changing collaton?

I´m starting to hate beta products and unsupported applications from MS now ;-(
And I´m so frustrated now that I just must say I loath all the pre-requisites needed to install FCS...
If FCS needs SQL 2005 SP1, SCOM, Visual C+, .NET framwork, Powershel etc, then make the wizard install everything on the fly!
It takes forever to install antivirus on MS Platform - Symantec Endpoint Protection runs on its own, and is installed and configured in less than an hour...

I guess here "forefront" can be helpful but I don't know how. Can you provide any article or best practices ?

My infrastructure includes MOSS, Exchange Server, Sql Server, AD Server, VM machines, and 50 Clients.

With Stirling beta 2 being released with support from 10 vendors for SAS

Are these the only 10 which will be available at RTM or are there others in the works to be announced by RTM time? Specifically any chance Stirling RTM will perform Security Assessment Sharing with Cisco’s MARS platform? Is this in the works or is Cisco perceiving Stirling as a competitor. With Juniper and Qradar supporting Stirling it seems pretty glaring that Cisco wasn’t on the list consider Juniper and Qradar are probably Cisco biggest competitors in the STM market.

Beta 2 Prereqs Link wrong

Well I went and downloaded the System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2, using the link provided. Imagine my surprise when it downloaded System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2. Is this link actually correct, or is the only way to get a working copy of Beta to go with the VHDs? If the link is not correct, someone might want to update it so it is correct.

FSE Beta 2 installation error

I am having problems getting Beta 2 to install over Beta 1. I get the following error:

Failed to register DLL with PerfMon. (-2147022895 C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Forefront security for Exchange
Server\ForefrontExchangeTransportScanner.ini )

Then it backs out the installation and advises:

There was a problem during installation and it could not be completed successfully. Exit code: 1603.
Is there a way to uninstall Forefront Beta 1 without messing up Exchange?
Is ehere a step I am missing doing the installation. I could not find any installation walk throughs.

What's Happening with Stirling?

I’ve been periodically checking the progress of Stirling but haven’t been able to find a new beta download or a progress report for months. Even the blogs seem to have gone quiet about this product. Does anyone have any updated information or can someone point me to a location where I can find some?

We use Forefront exclusively so I am very interested in all aspects of Stirling, especially since upgrading to Windows 2k8 x64 and SQL 2k8 x64 has broken the enterprise management portion of Forefront.

Stirling - Improvements and challenges

As I see it there are two huge problems with Forefront today.

1. Centralized management is at best a mess in todays version, and lacks much in general. Huge improvements in ease to use, reports and monitoring and control from the central management have to be done. I belive most of this have been adressed in Stirling, at least from what I have seen of videos and labs.

2. WSUS isn't telling the clients and servers when there is updates available! When the clients and servers in huge networks they have to ask, maby up to 24 times a day for updates. There will be huge amounts of unneccessary data flowing. This can be a big factor depending, of the number of operative systems and the frequency of the update check. Why have not Microsoft implemented a way of telling the WSUS to contact groups of computers, og individual computers when updates for they're product is available? This problem could very well be a showstopper for larger companies.

This is my opinion of the worst aspects of Forefront. Any other big issues or comments?

Sitrling MUltiple sites

Is there any info about on how Stirling will handle multiple sites. Will there be an Enterprise Managment Console which can manage downlevel stirling consoles at seperate sites?
The beta 1 has been out for over 7 months and very little information is being released. Bits and pieces are comming out in webcast,blogs,etc but nothing really substantial.With the slow progress as it seems does that mean stirling is no longer on schedule for first half of 2009? I undersattnd there are NDAs but how exactly are they to build anticipantion and interest in Stirling without sharing more info on what there planning to put into it?

Hello folks.

Here at my company, i'm using FCS since March, and i'm not very satisfied with it.

These are points to believe that should be solved:

FCS is to heavy and needs much more system requirements than similar tools at the market for the same price, for instance Tend Micro SMB with Messaging support for exchange.
In each desktop i have something like almost 80 Mb of ram consumed by Forefront and MOM agent...... Trend don't use more than 24 MB.
The process of installation is very hard, need more than one server, for not having to buy a super server, doesn't allow one SBS server to be installed on.....
The FCS console is very poor, and is not only one console, it's in fact three, because you have to do severall taks in Forefront console, Mom Adminsitrator console, and mom user console, at trned you do all this in one console over the browser, no software need to use.
At the console, you cannot define a hour and minute of scan, you can only define hourly scans, it'swrong at my company the lunch time is betwen 12 and 13 hours, but some folks stay a litle longer and so i can't define forefront to run at 12.15 for example.
Sometimes forefront at the client start doing assement and other things to send to the server during job time, it's wrong that takes performance of the desktop, should be given a way of time a schedule to do this.
At forefront console, i can define one or more computers to scan, but after doing that i cannot know wich computers are running that scan....

These are only considerations to be analized, because i bought this FCS with a contract for three and i wanna help to increase the quality to FCS.

Exclude Systems

I have installed Forefront Stirling on a system were SCE 2007 was installed already, which is working fine so far. But because of the default rules (All Assets/Default Client Security) which cannot be edited, all managed Systems are assigned to Forefront. Is there any way to exclude Systems from Forefront (not install Forefront on some Systems) but still be able to manage them with SCE 2007?
