DNS SRV Records Missing - Cannot join XP machines to Domain

    Question

  • Hello,

I am trying to recreate my domain after a failed 2003 to 2012 foundation server migration. I have tried completely reinstalling the OS and building a new AD DS and DNS from scratch but I seem to have the same issues. I have several XP machines that need to join the domain and I get one the following two errors when I try to get them to rejoin (from c:\windows\debug\dcdiag:

    Error 1:

DNS was successfully queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain giuseppespizza.local:

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.giuseppespizza.local

The following domain controllers were identified by the query:

    gdc.giuseppespizza.local

Common causes of this error include:

    - Host (A) records that map the name of the domain controller to its IP addresses are missing or contain incorrect addresses.

    - Domain controllers registered in DNS are not connected to the network or are not running.

    Error 2:

I have been working on this for a few days now. Here are some steps I have tried:

    1. ipconfig /flushdns & ipconfig /registerdns then start and stop netlogon service
    2. Ensured server is not a DHCP host (kb241505)
    3. DNS zone name is the same as AD DS name (kb241505)
    4. DNS zone is allowing both nonsecure and secure dynamic updates (kb241505)
    5. Tried disabling the hidden Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface
    6. Verified in Operations Masters that GDC.giuseppespizza.local is the operations master for RID PDC and infrastructure.
    7. Removing and reinstalling the DNS role.
    8. Reinstallation of the Windows Server 2012 Foundation OS software.

I have a feeling that my DNS is missing entries, I have attached screen shots of the root domain and _msdcs folders:

[Removed Images since account is not yet verified, Will post in comments when I can]

    Some notes:

    • Domain and Forest levels are at Server 2008 (the lowest I could set it)
    • The old Server 2003 machine is still running DHCP but is correctly pushing the IP for the DNS server. (I will transfer this eventually to completely decommission that machine)
    • There are 6 XP machines that need to join this domain (We are going to be slowly upgrading them to 7)

Please help, I really starting to hit a brick wall here.. Please let me know if I need to post any more information.

  • Are the new client records present? If not manually add them.

  • Dave: I added the one machine and was able to join it to the domain! I am going to continue to check out some of the other machines, but we may be in good shape! I appreciate the dedication, will post updates.

  • Good news, then you have to check your clients and DNS server to update records automatically and everything will go smoothly.

But keep in mind that you missed the recommendation when you used APIPA, as all members commented on it.

  • Good to hear. Now is a good time to re-scope the DHCP server to non-APIPA, and boot the clients.

  • Some updates:

    • Subnet was missing in Sites and Services, fixed
    • DNS reverse lookup zone was incorrect, fixed
    • Disabled IPv6.

I still cannot join my XP machines to the domain. One major issue I keep seeing is DNS does not seem to resolve the DNS server name. I even connected a laptop to the network and tried the following:

    C:\Users\usjocat>nslookup
    Default Server:  giuseppespizza.local
    Address:  169.254.212.11

    > gdc
    Server:  giuseppespizza.local
    Address:  169.254.212.11

    *** giuseppespizza.local can't find gdc: Non-existent domain
    > quit

    C:\Users\usjocat>ping gdc
Ping request could not find host gdc. Please check the name and try again.

On the server, GDC, I still have problems with nslookup as well but not with ping:

    C:\Users\Administrator>nslookup
    Default Server:  gdc.giuseppespizza.local
    Address:  169.254.212.11

    > gdc
    Server:  gdc.giuseppespizza.local
    Address:  169.254.212.11

    *** gdc.giuseppespizza.local can't find gdc: Non-existent domain
    > quit

    C:\Users\Administrator>ping gdc

Pinging GDC.giuseppespizza.local [169.254.212.11] with 32 bytes of data:
    Reply from 169.254.212.11: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Could the old server still be trying to run DNS? I'm really baffled as to what's happening here.

  • 169.254.x.x are in the APIPA range. I'd suggest you use another range of addressing.

  • Dave: Before I start re-IPing machines I would like to get the machines back onto the domain. Though I do agree with you that the IP scheme is not preferable, this system had been under that IP addressing scheme for many years without issues. Definitely something I want to take care of

Update: I really think the old DNS server is still running or causing conflicts. Several of the machines are showing the DNS Server as the old IP address and not the new machine. Furthermore, when I stopped the DNS service on the old machine, the entire network went down. Any ideas on how I can safely move to the new DNS server?

  • Depending on your router there may be problems continuing to using this range.

Since this is storage server you might ask them over here.

  • Yea change APIPA range, APIPA cannot provide information about local routers or about DNS servers.

APIPA is intended for small business or residential network environments, usually less than 25 clients, that are not routed or connected to the Internet.

  • Housam: This is actually a small business environment with only 7 clients and 1 server so an APIPA scheme was probably the intention when it was first created.

Dave: I will try a cross post. Thanks.

    Saturday, April 05, 2014 6:28 PM
  • It doesn't really matter that there are only 7 clients. APIPA addresses are not routable. Not saying this is the only problem but best to remove this problem from the equation.

  • I am not routing these machine to any other subnets. Please advise if you have any other solutions besides this because you are taking me down a path I do not want to go down at this time.

  • Then you'll likely need this regedit or add the DNS records manually.

  • Did you try to run nslookup after you disabled IPv6 and created the reverse lookup zone?

And also check this link to verify your DNS SRV records on your domain:

  • Update: Made a few changes and now the dcdiag connection test succeeds and nslookup resolves the GDC server.

    1. Took another look at the DHCP server since clients were incorrectly getting .10 instead of .11 for the DNS. Found a missing entry for the new DNS server and added it.
    2. Added the registry per Dave Patrick's suggestion.

Still have the same issue with machines not being able to join the domain:

    • One machine (static IP) can resolve "ping GDC" correctly, but nslookup fails. (POS5 in the dcdiag below)
    • Another machine (DHCP) does not resolve

  • Are the new client records present? If not manually add them.

  • Your statement that APIPA was part of the design.. seriously? Who designed this.  An APIPA address is used by a device when it cannot find a DHCP server that can provide the adapter with an IP address.

  • Dave & Housam: Thanks for all the help. Yes a new IP scheme is definitely in order. Hopefully I can get some time on the system when I can do it all at once (when the business is closed).
