DPM causes VOLSNAP error 27 on HyperV Host during backup

    Question

  • Hi all,

We have a 3 node cluster using CSV.  DPM set to serial backups of the child servers.  All is working brilliantly, however on the odd occasion we have a event Volsnap 27 on the host Hyperv Server during a child backup.

    event VolSnap 27

The shadow copies of volume \\?\Volume{30c06660-c944-11de-a12b-0025b3240b2e} were aborted during detection because a critical control file could not be opened.

Any ideas why and how to fix?

  • Sorry forgot to add Parent HyperV server all windows 2008 R2, with SP1.  Child servers various XP/2003/2008 and happens on any.

  • Does the event only occur when performing an online backup of Hyper-V virtual machines?  Do you also see the following event?

    Source: Microsoft-Windows-FilterManager
    Event ID: 3
    Description:
Filter Manager failed to attach to volume '\Device\HarddiskVolume126'. This volume will be unavailable for filtering until a reboot. The final status was 0xc03a001c.

If so, what is the final status error code?

I suspect that the problem is caused by VSS in the Guest VM. Are there any VSS errors on the child around the time the error is logged on the host?
