Hello,
I would like to know what are the differences between the self-service portal (SSP) included in SCVMM 2012 and App Controller 2012. I would also like to know if App-Controller will be integrated into SCVMM 2012.
Regards, Francesco.

App Controller and Virtual Machine Manager are both components of System Center 2012. App Controller is integrated with Virtual Machine Manager, it is just not installed as part of the same setup wizard. Within App Controller when you add in the a connection to a Virtual Machine Manager management server, all of the clouds, services and virtual machines will automatically display within App Controller. App Controller uses the same access control as Virtual Machine Manager, so all of the permissions for user roles in Virtual Machine Manager also apply in App Controller.
The self-service portal included with Virtual Machine Manager helps provide continuity for people upgrading from Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2. When you upgrade to System Center 2012, the self-service portal will also be upgraded and allows you to introduce App Controller on a different schedule if a phased implementation is desired.
If you are not upgrading, I recommend you can choose not to install the self-service portal during Virtual Machine Manager setup and instead install App Controller.
App Controller is a super-set of the functionality in the self-service portal. With App Controller you can:
- View and deploy virtual machines and services (the self-service portal shows only virtual machines)
- View virtual machines and services from more than 1 VMM management server (providing they are in the same trust boundary)
- Upgrade services
- Copy files to/from VMM libraries
- View, deploy and upgrade services running in Windows Azure
- Use Active Directory users and groups to provide access to Windows Azure subscriptions
Thanks
Richard

We are trying to decide on whether to install thew Self-Service Portal or App Controller (VMM 2012 is installed and running). We only have a need for the features included in the Self-Service Portal but noticed in the documentation that it will no longer be supported beyond VMM 2012. Our question is, does App Controller provide all the features of the Self-Service portal without any additional overhead (e.g. creation of Private Clouds, Service Templates, etc. in VMM 2012)?
Thanks!
JJ

Hi JJ,
You will need to create a private cloud to be able to use either the Self-Service Portal or App Controller. You don't need to create Service Templates to use App Controller.
Creating a private cloud is pretty easy. In the MMS 2012 Day 1 Keynote (33 minute mark), Vijay creates a private cloud in 30 seconds. OK, it was more like 35 secs :-).
If you are looking at the fastest way to get up and running with a self service, you should choose App Controller.
If you install the VMM SSP you're choosing a deprecated product and will have to replace it with App Controller sooner or later. Either as part of the next release of System Center, or when you start exploring features such as service templates.
Thanks
Richard

Richard,
OK, I give up. Please help! How do I add my existing virtual machines being managed by VMM to the private cloud I created so I can manage them from App Controller?
Regards,
JJ
P.S. Took me less than 30 seconds to create a private cloud... :-)

Nevermind, I figured it out... :-) ...it was an error between the keyboard and monitor.
