Not sure if this is a bug with v4.5.2 or if the App-V Trial Guide (http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/7/8/f784a197-73be-48ff-83da-4102c05a6d44/MSAppVirt45Trial_Guide_Final.docx) no longer applies to this version?
The issue is that if the virtualized silverlight (packaged exactly as per the Trial Guide) is run on a desktop with IE7 and IE7 has not been run nativly such that the IEUSER.exe process is running, the Silverlight virtualied instance will fail. In most cases it hangs, then after 5-10 minutes IE will appear, but withour Silverlight.
if one then terminated ieuser.exe and iexplore.exe via task manager, then starts and closes IE locally, such that ieuser.exe is then still running (or just leave the local instance of IE running), then initiates the Silverlight App-V instance of IE, it opens and functions as expected (as per the trial guide). This is not an issue with IE8 (appears IE8 does include ieuser.exe.)

App-V Trial Guide: SQL Server on a separate machine?

Hi,

in the App-V Trial Guide (http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/7/8/f784a197-73be-48ff-83da-4102c05a6d44/MSAppVirt45Trial_Guide_Final.docx) it is described to install the SQL Server (express) on the same box that later on will become the App-V Management Server.

I personally think, that this advice is not the best choice and I invite you to discuss here about that topic.

Why do I think having SQL Express on the App-V Management Server is not the option?

Well, first of this is a scenario that Microsoft does not officially support. For App-V MS supports several versions of SQL server but this explcitely excludes SQL Express / MSDE versions (that for licensing have to run on the same machine like the App-V Management Server.
So, the Trial Guides builds an infrastructure that MS does not support.

Second, this Trial Guide for mayn IT Pros is the first direct contact with App-V. Unfortuenally, this first introduction leads into an environment that _surely_ leads to Publishing and Streaming errors. The technical reason for this is that after all components have been installed and every time the App-V Management Server gets rebooted, the critical App-V service will NOT start, because in the very, very most cases (if not always) this service starts at a time when the SQL Server Services are not propperly running yet. Because the App-V Management Server service can not contact its critical database, it fails to start.

I admit that running SQL Express on the same machine as the App-V Management server potentially saves you one machine.

So, what do you think: Should the TrialGuide be modified to have the SQL server on another box then the App-V Management Server?

Documentation on Sequencing Options File

The sequencer supports a file which is created when you change option settings. This file contains some options that are not settable by using the options user interface. For example, you can make the default to turn off ACLs and turn on MSI creation. When created, it does not, however, contain a setting for compression.

Is the format of this file, including any settings not written by default, documented (and if not, can it please be)?

Hi,

I have another question regarding the sft file format documentation. I was looking at the data blocks of the files held within the sft file and noticed something strange, when ZLIB compression is applied the osguard.cp files's data blocks seem not to be sequential within the sft file, this is the only file that isn't. So when I create an sft file and apply the ZLIB algorithm the sequencer is unable to read my package, and checking the sequencer log file it reports a problem reading the osguard.cp file (I don't have the exact error it's on another machine I don't have access to right now). I don't have a problem loading package files I have created without compression applied.

The documentation does not specify anything in regard to how the data blocks of the osguard.cp file should be indexed, has anyone else seen this issue and could help me in understanding why the osguard.cp file is stored differently.

App-V Sequencing How-to template (used to be "Sequencing Recipe" before)

based in the idea of the old "SoftGrid Recipe Template" I created a document that guides a Sequencing Engineer through the process of preparing, performing and finalizing a Sequening Job and that delivers a framework of (propably to detailed) information gathering.
Since MSFT stopped using the term "recipe" and replaced it by "how-to" I gave the piece that new name as well.

App-V File Format Documentation - History Entry Sequencer Version

I am using the App-V file format document to create a virtual application, my question is what version number do I use for the sequencer version when I had a history entry 4.5.0.0, 4.5.999.999?

APPV Client 4.5 on XP+SP3

Dear All,

We are using the following command line to install APPV Client: setup.exe /s /v"/quiet /norestart MINFREESPACEMB=\"5120\" /qb"0\"\"
The target clients are SCCM07 Clients whose Advertise programs Client Agent are enabled for virtual application package advertisement.

The installation is successful and works fine on Windows 7 machines. But not in Windows XP. Where can´t load sfttray.exe (ERROR Code: 4513CDC-0C701633-00000005. Denied Access). Neither we can load SftCMC.msc console without the same error code.

I don't have (yet ;) experience with APPV. Any help will be gratefully appreciated.

Virtualization Challenge...

Dear Folks,

i have a question for using app-V. The following challenge has to be verified.

Imagine,

You got 2 web applications. Each of them uses a different JRE (java runtime environment). Now, is it possible to use both JRE versions on the same client and is it possible to decide, which JRE has to be used by opening the two web applications?
An other case could be, two different oracle clients at one client computer. Is it possible, to use two oracle clients at the same time for connecting DBs?

Is there a way, App-V can handle this and if, is there anywhere some kind eof "best practise" to realize this kind of challenge?

For every answer i would be glad.

User Access Permissions -documentation

Hi,

I was browsing the documentation for the client's user permissions, and while I was able to find this list of permissions that you could set on or off: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc843786.aspx , I couldn't find proper explanation for each of the permissions.

Granted, most of them are rather self-describing but for instance there's new permissions called "Change OSD files" which is not explaned anywhere what is the actual effect of it. So both the question and suggestion:

Question: What does this one specific grant do? I guess it's maybe whether or not normal user can overwrite OSD files in the cache when doing the refresh, but isn't filesystem ACLs supposed to be the method to protect those if the intended behaviour is to stop people overwriting cached OSDs (such right wouldn't be able to stop manually overwriting intended OSD file from the filesystem)?

Suggestion: Add short descriptions to each of the permissions on the page linked above, so that even novices (and I ;-)) can get intended meaning and effect of each permission.

Authentication -settings in Provider policies

Hello,

I noticed an error in the documentation at page http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc843646.aspx where it is stated that three authentication types exists in the product (Windows, Basic and Anonymous).

Whereas this was the case in earlier versions, this is no longer true with 4.5 RTM Management Console that only shows "Windows Authentication" in the dropdown-box (making it little bit redundant, btw). Also page's text talks about setting account for anonymous authentication which of course is also non-existing functionality now.

Generate Difference File

Ok, so here's first question about content in on-line documentation:

As discussed elsewhere in this forum, it seems that option called "Generate Difference File", has disappeared from the Sequencer UI. However, according to this page: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc843635.aspx , it states that such option exists.

Is the documentation incorrect (as I'm sure it's written against 4.5 RC where such option existed) or what's going on?
