Sequecing Applications that will be Deployed to Terminal Services

Guys,

I am looking to get some information from those who sequence applications. When sequecing an application that will eventually run Terminal Services Servers, during the capture phase of sequencing the application, should we do what we normally do on a TS Server when installing Apps, i.e. change the mode of the machine the software install is being captured on for sequencing to Install Mode... if yes, how do we capture this step when we are using XP machines to capture the install process during sequencing?

Or are we okay to ignore the Install Mode step (and putting the server back into Execute mode) when trying to sequence an application that will evetually run on TS Servers.

WinZip 14 Error

I am seeing a strange error when running a sequenced version of WinZip 14. I have registered the version in the install and run the application multiple times before finishing the sequence. When I try to run the sequenced application I am getting this error:

Unable to install over the MSI version of the installtion
Please obtain the MSI verison or uninstall WinZip first.

I have set the log to verbose and none of this is showing up in the log file. Seems like maybe the setup needs to configure something for the user but cannot.

Has anyone ever seen this?

Hi.

I've started to play with App-V 4.6 Beta on Windows 2008 RTM x64 bit.

I've tried to move some applications from a 4.5 enviornment that we have, some work fine and others don't. Some of the errors that occurs does occur on both the packages that I move from 4.5 and on the ones that I resequence on a Windows 2008 RTM X86 4.6 sequencer and run them on a Windows 2008 RTM X64 Terminal server. (The packages that I tried to move from the 4.5 enviorment is sequenced on a Windows 2003 SP2 4.5 CU1 sequencer.)

App 1 :

Citrix Access Gateway 4.6 Admin tool.

The sequence goes thru fine, the application starts on the Sequencer and works
When I launch it on the Terminal server it just quits right after launch. (Does not start at all)

And these three events is logged in the eventviewer :

The sequence works fine, the application launches on the Terminal server, everything works fine, exept if I try "File Open", then the application just freezes.

I'm unable to determind whats wrong with these packages using process monitor.

Problem sequencing Adobe Reader 8 or 9

Hi, i've been trying to sequence Adobe Reader 8 and 9, but i run every time one painful problem when sequencing to N: drive.

My problem is - i start monitoring, install adobe reader with vfs or straight to appv/softgrid drive (this case letter N:).
After that i customize adobe little bit: I go to Adobe Reader 8 -> Preferences ->Trust Manager -> change settings -> allow all web sites -> ok -> close adobe reader -> stop monitoring
start monitoring again and look same place (Adobe Reader 8 -> Preferences ->Trust Manager -> change settings), all settings greyed out, and settings is "reseted".

if i sequence this to drive letter z:, m: or q: etc. this works fine, Adobe Reader 8 -> Preferences ->Trust Manager -> change settings is not greyed out.

So, problem exist every time when i try sequence to drive letter N:, this is kind a weird problem and could be a bug ?

(Manual installation of Adobe Reader 8/9 works fine from N-drive, so my opinion is that this is seqvencer problem.)

Guys , I've just sequenced Richmond Supportdesk client 6.7.4. It all sequenced without any probs , and I was able to launch and login into the application on my sequencer pc. I saved the package , and imported into my appv server. The applications deloys find to my users specified - they can then dobule click on the icon to launch it , it loads to 100% and then gives the follow error :

This file doesnt exist on my sequencer pc - so I dont know where its calling it from. Any ideas ? The application laucnhes fine from within the appv sequencer application.

Any help would be great !

As per the Microsoft perscriptive guide: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939796

Items that require interaction with Outlook 2007 from the operating system or from other programs do not function correctly. This includes "mailto:" links and the Start menu shortcut for the default e-mail client.

So basically sending a attachment or intiating any email link from any Office 2007 app like word doesn't work. We have confirmed this when testing our sequenced 2007, unfortunatly in a collobaritive enviroment this complelty negates the possibilty of using softgrid to deploy Office 2007 to our users.

Huge oversight by Microsoft???!!! Any chance a fix is coming??!!!

App-V 4.5.2 Virtualized Silverlight does not work with IE7 if a native instance of ieuser.exe is not running

Not sure if this is a bug with v4.5.2 or if the App-V Trial Guide (http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/7/8/f784a197-73be-48ff-83da-4102c05a6d44/MSAppVirt45Trial_Guide_Final.docx) no longer applies to this version?
The issue is that if the virtualized silverlight (packaged exactly as per the Trial Guide) is run on a desktop with IE7 and IE7 has not been run nativly such that the IEUSER.exe process is running, the Silverlight virtualied instance will fail. In most cases it hangs, then after 5-10 minutes IE will appear, but withour Silverlight.
if one then terminated ieuser.exe and iexplore.exe via task manager, then starts and closes IE locally, such that ieuser.exe is then still running (or just leave the local instance of IE running), then initiates the Silverlight App-V instance of IE, it opens and functions as expected (as per the trial guide). This is not an issue with IE8 (appears IE8 does include ieuser.exe.)

MDW issue with Access 97

Hi,

We created a virtual application for Access 97 using Citrix Profiler and enforced the security by using a command line parameter "Q:\MyAppFolder\MyApp.MDB" /wrkgrp "Q:\MyAppFolder\MyApp.MDW" (both my database and mdw files are located on a network share, which we mapped it as "Q" drive). When we launch the application from profiler system, it is working fine. However, if we publish the virtual application to user, it is prompting for user credentials dialog box but the dialog box will not allow us to enter in any information. It will not display focus for us to enter info.

Any hints to fix this issue would be highly appreciated !

I'm a sequencing a application, where-in I need to kill a process just before the shutdown of my shortcut. I know PRE SHUTDOWN is not supported. So i have scripted to kill a process POST LAUNCH i.e.

Dear,

During a prove of concept with App-V (4.5 cummulative update 1) in SCCM 2007 R2 SP1 integrated mode we found the following problem.

"how can we create a virtual package that contains shortcuts to jar files that is linked to the virtualised JRE (so 2 virtual apps working together)".

In Detail:
1 install the Jave JRE (in our case 1.6.0_14) on the (virtual) sequencing box.
2 start the sequencer and install the java application. In our case that is a few JAR files (file copy) where only one is called from several shortcuts (each pointing to javaw.exe with the same JAR file and configuration file that changes per shortcut).
3. reset the sequencer to its original state , start the sequencer and do the JRE.

Step 2 is causing the problem. We are not able to create a working virutal package. It simply doesn't seem to work.

Does anyone have any suggestion (packaging the JRE together with the JARs/shortcuts is not a working option for us)?

App V Capturing Workstation ID,pls help in solving

Hi Folks,

Am sequencing an application on App-V 4.5. The behavior of the application is , I need to enter the Workstation ID while installing. During sequencing the machine ID is also captured and is stored as a registry in the files.

Now When I publish the App on other machines, my workstation ID(the one that is captured during sequencing) is shown. I want this not to happen. So can anyone help me in solving the situation in such a way that, when ever the App is publish on a machine that certain Machine ID must be in the Application registry.

Create an MSI file to run without Admin Rights ?

At a customer site they use Sophos Enterprise Console as Antivirus Solution. We can manage most of the clients with the Console but some users require a manual installation.
The installation requires a password. We would make an MSI package and send it to the clients (Normally we use SMS to install these files but for these users it isn't possible)
Is there any way they can run the MSI package without needing an Admin PW ?

Error message appears:

'MS Office Outlook'

'The operation failed due to installation problem. Restart Outlook and try again. If the problem persists please reinstall.

When attempting to reinstall Outlook, error shows:

'Windows Installer'

'This Patch package could not be opened. Verify thatthe patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package'.

When I attempt to install on my laptop it works fine. Any solutions anyone?

This is my first post.

I have been using SoftGrid (4.1) to sequence and deploy Office 2003 to users.

Today I needed to use the "Mail" Control Panel item to create a new profile for a user, and to my suprise is isn't there!

Where has the "Mail" control panel item gone, and how can I configure additional profiles etc for my users?

Icons get re-directed when upgrading a package

Hi,

Im trying to upgrade a package with a new file. The upgrade works fine but when i go to test it the shortcut icon in the start menu gets copied to "C:\windows\system32\%SFT_MNT%\"Application Name"\VFS\CSIDL_COMMON_PROGRAMS\".

I can launch the icon from that location but i need it to be in the start menu obviously.

I have open the package and checked to see if that location is mentioned anywhere but the icon appears to be pointing to the correct location.

Could someone please help.

Sequencing .NET best practices

Hi all

I'm new to App-v but have been reading a lot about it. My particular need is to sequence a 32bit .Net 2.0 app that will be deployed to Vista and XP machines. What is the preferred, must robust way to sequence with respect to .NET framework?

I've read the KB article detailing what .NET versions are supported on which deployment OS, but I'm curious what you all in the trenches recommend: sequence .NET inside the app? Or use dynamic suite? Or go around and install .Net on all the PCs before deployment?

.... I can deploy the application to desktops fine. It launches fine , but after a few second (generally around 5 to 10secs) of looking at a document , the following error appears

"Licensing for this product has stopped"

"You cannot use this product at this time. You must repair the problem by uninstalling and then reinstalling this product or contact your administrator"

"148:3"

Any one else getting this ??

Local workstation associations question

Hi folks, I am building a test environment where most if not all applications will be delivered via app-v with a lean base workstation image and am not clear on this scenario.
I'm a user on the A/D domain, log into this "lean" workstation, open my network hard drive which includes documents associated with certain applications, MS Word for example. If the application doesn't exist for the user (hasn't been launched yet), does the icon show as associated with MS word even though it isn't recognized by the system yet? Can a user simply double click on a document in a home drive and have the virtualized application launch? Do I have to pre-define associations locally on the workstation to accomplish this?

Office 2007/Outlook 2007 issues

Hi,

I'm having an issue with Outlook 2007 which is part of a sequenced Office 2007. I've used the KB article of sequencing office 2007 and the App-V blog entry about the sequencing of Office 2007 (the 30 steps version).

All sequencing goes well actually, no errors whatsoever, but when I start Outlook 2007 and I hit the "New Mail" (or any other email function (reply, etc)) button Outlook just hangs. When I end the program using the task manager and look at the crash report it states that Outlook has stopped working in module "Unknown".

I've tried sequencing on Windows Server 2008, Terminal Server and Vista Business using App-V sequencer 4.5.1485.

The client is a Windows Server 2008 Terminal Server

All documentation I've found about sequencing Office 2007 uses the 4.2 version and none the 4.5 version.

Have anyone seen the same symptoms I'm experiencing?

I have the app sequenced and it works fine. but when i pass an .rtf file to word 2007 with merge data, word starts up, but runs the install and configures the app, everytime. any ideas why?? word works fine with everything local.

vba interaction with appv applications

We have successfully sequenced Passport 2007 and deployed it. We have an outside contractor that has created some office documents that want to interact with this application through vba macros in the documents. the macros can see the applications just as it would if installed locally, but certain functions don't work properly. Has anyone else tried this??

Application Launch from File - Multilaunch Issues

I have a client that has sequenced the Remedy User application. The product predominanty works just fine, but has 1 oddity that I have yet to be able to chase down. The behavior changes between the sequenced and non-sequenced versions despite identical installations.

On the installed version, if you double-click an ARTask file and Remedy is already running, the file is processed in the currently running copy of the software.

On the sequenced version, if you double-click an ARTask file, it doesn't matter whether Remedy is open or not, it ALWAYS launches a new instance of the app.

I realize that limitation of the number of instances that can run is an application side issue, but I don't really care how many copies they have running, the issue is getting the file to launch in the existing window which is the expected behavior of the product. Is this a file association thing?

Any help would be much appreciated.

First, i´m a totaly new to App-V.

Background.
I have sequenced an application with version 4.6 of the Sequencer.
Imported it to version 4.5 of the management server
Started it with version 4.6 on the client computer.
Application is sequenced on the Q:-drive.

Operating system on all machines is Server 2008 x64.

My problem is the following.

A user must be able to write/modify some files and a folder in the sequenced application. Is that possible?

Virtual File permission issues

Hi,

Can someone tell me how i can apply file permission to the c:\windows\system32 folder for a virtual app.

I have virtulised Access97 and users need to be able to open mulitple instances of Access. They can do this if the are admin users but it comes up with an error "C:\windows\system32\system.mdw" file is already in use if they try to do it as a restricted user.

I have read some other post about changing the Enforced security descriptors to give files permission etc. but that does not seem to work.

I have also changed the file to user data but that does not work either.

I'm thinking of manually applying the permission to the folder during sequencing. Will this work??? I have also though about applying XCALCS through a script before the application is launched. (Dont know if this will work).

If someone could please point me in the right direction on reading up on setting file and folder permissions that would be greatly appreciated. For some reason all my searches have pointed to dead ends.

Meditech Application virtualization

I am trying to sequence our Meditech application. Once I successfully create the package, install it on a client VIA MSI file, and try to run the program I get an aplpication error inside Mediteh stating that it is not installed in the correct direcotry under program files. Is there any type of a workaround for an application checking to see where it is installed to?

I recently sequenced oracle 10g admin tools, it completed successfully. I tried loading the sequence into SCCM and got the error "Load virtual application failure" followed by "Error: Argument 'Picture' must be a picture that can be used as a icon"

Many people working with App-V always have the same question.

There are two entries at The App-V Blog that gives us a hint which softwaren can not be sequenced.

It would be simply great if Microsoft can provide the virtual community a list with already successful sequenced Microsoft products.

MS Visio & Project - Setting Up Licencing

Guys, Ive got 10 licences for MS Visio 2007 and MS Project 2007. I have sequenced up both applications and both are deploying to my workstations fine. Is it possible to link my 10 licences to each application , and if the application is launched more than 10 times , it tells the user that all licences are currently in use ? Can I use licences like this ??
