Proposed AnswerCreating a virtual server farm in server 2008

I am interested in migrating all of our servers (and we only have 4 of them) onto one physical server and have the others residing in virtual machines. We have a dedicated exchange server, two file servers and one SQL 2005 server running a ERP software solution.

I believe that our existing SQL server could be used for this provided that I increase the amount of available drive space as well as increase the amount of RAM on it.

My question is: What would be the preferred order that I should have the servers in? I read that you can run SQL 2005/2008 in a virtualized environment without any discernible loss of preformance. I am currently waiting to receive the SQL 2008 installation disk so that I can install that in a virtualized environment. I currently am using my laptop to get everything up and running so that it can all talk together. So far I have Server 2008 enterprise installed on my laptop which allows for four virtual machines to be created on it using the same license key.

I have created a Primary DC/DNS server on the physical box, a secondary DC/DNS server as a virtual machine, a file server as a virtual machine, and a exchange server as a virtual machine. What is the best way to proceed with getting the SQL 2008 server installed? Should this be on the physical box or in a virtual machine?

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

    Hello,

This should probably be posted in a hyper-v / server farm forum.
