Load Balanced App-V infrastructure

Hello all,

I wanna know the best way to load balance my App-V servers.
I plan to install 2 servers (in separate rooms) App-V and I wonder how I can load balance them in order to guaranty the best performance and a failover solution.

I also wonder how App-V servers are used during the virtualization of an application ? They just redirect the client to the location of the SFT files ? I wanna size them and I wonder if they can be virtualized (Hyper-V, VMWare or XenServer) ?

Another question : how can I also load balance the location of the SFT files ?

Console not upgraded

After installing 4.5 SP1 all the clients and sequencers receive the new version 4.5.2.17140 like expected.

However, on the management server the console version still says 4.5.1.15580. After looking at registry key for the Management Console the version says 4.5.2.17140

But looking at Help->About AppV Management Console it still says 4.5.1.15580 . I have uninstalled and re-installed. I deleted the existing database and created a new one. None of those options upgrade the management console on the server. The server is Windows 2008 SP2 x64

Any suggestions?

Hello Newsgroup,

I have the following Problem with a Upgrade from a 4.5 Management Server (Version: 4.5.1.15580) to SP1. Every time got the "Error 25100 Internal Error" After this a rollback happens.

OS: Server 2003 SP2 on VMware ESX 3.5, SQL Server 2005 on another Host, AD: Server 2003 R2

Has anybody an Idea or the same Problem??

What is the best way to convert servers from Physical to Virtual ?

Hello Friedns :

I am going to redesign our company servers structure and we are going to convert many of them from physical to virtual servers , I have searched a lot about applications that convert P2V like VMWare convertor , VMware Vcenter Convertor , VMWare Asistante and others ...
Some of them are free products and some of them have price , i have doubt about choosing one of them . i have some question about it :

What is the best aplication to convert P2V ?
Does it convert all the things on the server successfully and without any problems ?
Does Microsoft have such feature ? P2V ?

SCCM vs APP V Server

Having read the white paper on using SCCM as the distribution of virtual software I am wondering from people who have tried both what the feel is the best approach. We do have SCCM and the money is there to buidl a APP V server infrastructure.

The white paper to does talk about the rpos and the cons, but in the real world what are people finding, are the extra benefits of having the App V server a better way to go if you can afford it?

I know this may not be the right forum for this question, but I find the people within the technet community are the ones to ask.

Error 0000c801 when trying to access the AppV DB through AppV Manamgent Console

I wrote a blog about this since we couldn't find out how to resolve this error.

While installing AppV at a customer, we ran into a serious problem causing time to be eaten up. Every time we tried to connect to the AppV database through the AppV management console, we received the error “0000c800”. After reviewing logs from various places, it seemed there was an authentication issue. Most of the URL's we came across on the internet and Technet kept directing us to KB articles 930470 and 930565. After calling my coworker Michael Vrabel, he stated he had the same problem and told me how to resolve it. His solution worked perfect. I'm posting the lessened learned to hopefully assist fellow techies out there who are running across the same problem.

Follow this process after you have installed all other AppV components with success and your trying to connect to the Database through the AppV Management Console while receiving an error code of “0000c800”

Uninstall .NET
Uninstall IIS
Reboot
Install IIS
Install .NET
Reboot
Start AppV Management Console and connect to the Database.

Even though the KB articles 930470 and 930565 wasn't able to assist us, I would still highly recommend reviewing those articles to verify all of your settings and components are configured.

Softgrid 4.2 to App-V 4.5 Server Upgrade

Hi Folks,

How does one do an upgrade of the 4.2 server to the new 4.5 server on the same machine?

I insert the MSDOP disk onto which the latest MSDOP has been downloaded too (App-V file dates in October 2009) and then run the installer for the App-V server\Streaming and then I would hope to be presented with an option to update my existing server but instead it starts what appears to be a seperate install for the server. I can't choose the usual 554 port since the 4.2 server is using that.

I've looked on the web for some step by step instructions for how to do this but can't seem to find any, just the FAQ.

I want to do a test update to my test server: 4.2 standalone with an SQL 2005 Express DB and then if this works do the production environment of 3x VAS and 1x Managment point and a seperate MS SQL server which stores the DB when the clients for this are updated.

All clients connected to the test system are 4.5 clients.

SQL Job "Check Usage History"

Does anyone out there have a SQL Server-based SoftGrid data store which has its transaction logs backed up every hour? We just implemented ours in a SQL Server 2005 64-bit clustered environment. Here is my conversation with the DBA:

DBA: You have a monthly SQL job ("Check Usage History") that runs at 2:00AM, it truncates transaction log, and as a result trn. log backups sequence gets broken, and all consequent trn. backups after 2:00AM will fail. We can stop trn. log backups for your database, but then you will loose the ability of point in time recovery, and if something happens to the database you can only rely on last nights full backup, and would be able to the status of last night.

ME: Does it seem like the transaction log truncation is a bug with the SQL Job, or is it an expected result due to conflicts between the job and the transaction log backups?"

DBA: No that is not a bug, at the end of procedure which is called by the job named "Check Usage History", it truncates inactive part of transaction log without backing it up, this action breaks the sequence of the rest of our hourly transaction backups. Causing failed trn. backups every hour till the next full backup. It will be resolved the next day, but sends us 20 alerts in a row each month (on the first day of the month) due to failed trn. backup.

I suggest to share the issue with vendor, and if they insist on leaving the current SQL job the way it is, then we will have to ignore 20 alerts in a row once a month, or we can disable hourly trn. backup only for SoftGrid_PROD database, which is the last thing I want to do, I would like to have the maximum recoverability for all databases.

Any thoughts on this?

SCCM Integration with App-V, client uninstall / application delete behaviours.

Hi,

I'm using App-V (4.5 CU1) integrated with SCCM 2007 SP1. Overall the solution seems to work quite nicely, however there are two circumstances where I can see an issue.

1. If the App-V Client is uninstalled / reinstalled then the advertised virtual apps all disappear and do not re-populate.
2. If the user or an administrator deletes the application from the App-V control panel applet then again they do not re-appear.

Obviously there will be circumstances where these events may occur, is there any mechanism to force these advertisements to re-run on the client without re-advertising in SCCM.

I would like to have the central server be the authoritive source for packages as well as synchronize with all of the branch office streaming servers.

I'm a little confused on what I need to install and where.

What App-V server installers do I need to install on the central box and the remote boxes?

AppV Sequencer 4.5 SP1 - SCCM Installation

Has anybody looked into packaging the sequencer for delivery via SCCM for Windows 7. I have run into some issues with the C++ prereq. It appears that UAC is prompting when I use a /qn switch at the end of my Msiexec.exe /i command.
I guess the question is should I be trying to package the sequencer????

Hi.

I've set up a App-V test environment. I have a AD, a SQL, a Management Srv and clients. I have virtulized Messenger 8.1, Spotify Clt, WinRAR and Adobe Reader. When I launch "Default app" and Messenger 8.1 I am successfull. However all other apps gives me the error 19D0682A-0000274D. All searches says that its because the client can't speak to the server on the given port. I have however confirmed that I can telnet and if the was the case I shuold not had been able the launch the other apps.

What am I missing?

Double Desktop Shortcut when deploying using SCCM

We have recently had our first large scale, at least for us, deployment of JRE and an IE shortcut. And we have several users that have the icon appearing twice on their desktop. I did a roll out of the package using a couple nested collections:

RootCollection (usernames/computer names)
- Collection 1 (Computer names)
- Collection 2 (computer names)

Using seperate advertisements, I deployed to collection 1, then collection 2, which only contained computer names. I then deployed to the Rootcollection which contained the application users and some additional computer names, the user group was included in case we missed a PC.

When I set the deployment up this way, I spoke to our SCCM admin and he stated that they would only get 1 install and not both. But that does not appear to be the case.

Should the users have 2 shortcuts? Is there a better way to do this? Is there a way to make sure there is only 1 shortcut on the system?

Any help would be appreciated.

We evaluated appv about a year ago, we had it working, but didn't have the infrastructure for it at the time. I am setting up a server again to test it on our new system, and I am running into some problems. I followed the install guide, and I can publish the default app. My client machines can see the default app, but can not open it. Client machines are getting "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it". I checked the clients via telneting into the server on 554, and it worked without a problem. All the posts online, seem to point to a connectivity problem, but my connectivity does not seem to be the issue. Windows firewall is disabled on the server... I'm not sure what else to check. I edited the defaultapp.osd file to reflect the RTSP, but it seems like I'm getting nowhere. Please, someone point me in the right direction :)

Error in App-V 4.5 Sp1 Server Logs and Event Viewer: “Meter Module is in pipeline without Authentication module”

I am running Windows Server 2008 Sp2 X64 and with SQL 2005 Sp3 X64, App-V 4.5 Sp1 management Server is installed, nothing else. Used the MDOP Guide to install it, so it is installed verbatim to that guide. A User account is setup to start the APP-V management service, and the SPN's are regsitered. No streaming servers setup either.
When the server reboots the service fails to start for several minutes and the verbose logging only states

“Meter Module is in pipeline without Authentication module”
In the event viewer it is Event ID: 41536
It repeasts this about 4 times, and it also appears in the event viewer. Then the service starts.
Workstations fail to grab the default test application but I can map tot he UNC and launch successfully.

On Client when I attempting to do a Refresh to login and connect results in the error:

Error Code 45242F4-1690150A-200001F4

“ The Application Virtualization server has returned and Internal System Error.

SFT.LOG shows:

Failure on Desktop Configuration Server Request to URL rtsp://Server.Domain.net: 554

Msoft Virtual Machine resolution problems with a widescreen laptop

I was wondering if you could help me with a computer problem that I have. I like to play a really old DOS game called Championship Manager 9798. This was only compatible with Win 98 & youd to reboot the machine in DOS mode to play it. When XP came out, I was able to play this through a DOS box. When Vista came out, I was then able to play it with a virtual machine, with Win 98 as the operating system. I could make the screen go full size by pressing Alt+Enter &this was on a Dell widescreen monitor, & everything ran fine.

My problem is that I have just bought an HP widescreen laptop. The Virtual machine runs, but when I press Alt+Enter, it goes full screen, but there are two black bands about an inch wide down the side of the screen, meaning that the game is only about half of the screen in width.

Is there anything that you can think of that can be done? I’ve tried the internet to see if there’s anything, but all it says is that Virtual Machines arent with widescreens. I’m confused with this, as it works on my widescreen monitor (with my PC), or are there different variations of “widescreen”?

Someone suggested RDP onto the virtual machine, which you can’t do with Win 98. SO Ive tried to go back to getting the game to work via DOS box on an XP virtual machine. I managed this, but when I RDP onto it, all you see is a small DOS icon in the middle of the screen, so Im totally stuck & would give my right arm if you could get it to work properly on my laptop

App-V vs XenApp

Just wondering if anyone has any experience comparing the products? I've read the excellent comparison matrix from Ruben Spruijt which in my opinion seems to state that App-V is a better, more mature technology from a pure virtualisation perspective anyway.

Anyone have any real world experience?

I get the feeling that XenApp is a glorified isolation tool - alarm bells started ringing when Ruben's matrix stated that regression testing "may" be needed with XenApp, as well as "potential" issues for cohabitation. this worries me a lot.

Effectively, I've been keen to promote App-V in my company for a long period, but certain cost restrictions are pushing us more and more towards XenApp. I need to be able to prove that App-V is by far and away the better product. The fact that it's bundled with MDOP from a licensing POV doesn't help matters in the slightest.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

App-V version : Microsoft System Center Application Virtualization Management Server Version 4.5.0.1485 (3396)

We have a new install of App-V Server on Windows Server 2003 using shared MS SQL Server 2005 instance on a different port than the default SQL port. The service cannot connect to the SQL Server instance (it is running as NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService). After running the install as an account with SQL server sa permissions, the database looks to have been created correctly. The server account seems to be created correctly (named DOMAIN\SERVERNAME$) and the correct roles assigned to it.

What am I missing to get the service to even start?

I am trying to set up an APP-V SCCM integration. If I choose to deliver the app via local cache, will the users who have laptop still be able to access the app-v application when they go home? In other words, will users still be able to access app-v applications if they are disconnected from the network if the delivery method is local cache instead of streaming?

Guys I have this two issues.
1) My Sequencer is a "VM Window 7" on Server 2008. I test the Packages on three clients. An XP , Regular Window 7, and a VM Window 7. I have sequenced a 2005 PhyzWhiz II "Brain and Cranial " S/W which works with Quicktime 4x . I was getting "Error 339" during the "launch" phase of the sequencing. After manually registering the "COMDLG32.OCX" , I was able to launch the S/W on the "XP" client, but still throws same error on the both Window 7 and VM Window 7.

2) Anyone Packaged Career Scope 7.0 or 8.0 ?

It sequences fairly easy, but will not launch from any client, well not only that , the rootfolder and installed app gets corrupted after I attempt to launch from the client. !!!! :( .

APP-V and SCCM integration load balancing

I plan to integrate APP-V with SCCM, but since we have several thousand computers in our organization, I am concerned that one distribution point is not enough to service all the client requests. We have 3 SCCM distribution points and I can copy the app-v package to all 3 DPs, but how can I know that all three DPs are being equally utilized when streaming the app-v? How can I manage load balancing on the Distribution Point Servers or is this an automate process in SCCM?

Unable to connect to Application Virtualization System

Hello all.

Trying to set up a test App V 4.5.0.1485.

After having completed installation using SQL Express DB when I try to connect using the Console I get:

A remoting error occurred.

Make sure the Manamgement Console is properly configured and it has the same version as the Management Service.

Error code:0000C824

It is installed on Windows 2008 Server and i have done the installatin with a domain admin account. I am not using secure connection.

I have tried the following:

App-V 4.5 Clients don't log useage information to 4.2 Server

Folks,

We are having an issue whereby a 4.5 client doesn't log any useage information to our SoftGrid 4.2 server infrastructure. The clients launch and run applications successfully just no record of which apps the users are starting. The 4.5 clients are all running under vista.

Are there any tweaks\updates that are necessary to be applied to the servers or are there settings in the clients that need to be set?

Any machine with a 4.2 client logs useage information successfully into the server architecture.

Assigning software per machine

I guess Im a little confused on how to assign access to software. Ive read some posts from people claiming that per user licenses are more common than per machine licenses. I manage more than 1000 apps across more than 3000 PCs and to my knowledge only a handfull are specifically named user licenses. The vast majority of our non-networked licenses are per machine not per user. From my experience, per machine licenses out number per user licenses 10 to 1. Why doesnt App-V have the ability to assign software per machine given that it appears to be so common? How am I supposed to assign software via App-V if it will only let me assign it to users and most licenses are per machine?

App-V support in InstallShield 2010: How does it work?

I recently found out that the new version of InstallShield, v. 2010, now has support for creating App-V packages. I don't have any experience with InstallShield but have been sequencing and deploying our in house application for a few months now. I would like to get our buildmaster to use the app-v option in the InstallShield as soon as we start using the new version, but decided it was best to first get some more information about how this works. Unfortunatley not much info to be found at the moment.

This according to Acresso:

"Now when you build a traditional MSI project, InstallShield 2010 can simultaneously build it as a virtual App-V package. It can also automatically modify your legacy MSIs to App-V packages. InstallShield 2010 handles all the conversion work, so there’s no learning curve for developers new to application virtualization."

My "problem" here is to find out how this works. Our application uses SQL Server as database and requires a first time startup where a number of parameters are requried as input, and this need to be "caught" by the sequencer during a normal sequencing. So I am thinking if it is possible to create an App-V package for our application using InstallShield....

Any pointers in the right direction greatly appreciated.

We test now app-v 4.5.1 for several months already.

It happens that when a utiliseur decides to launch an application of the Office suite 2007, the following message appear: " insufficient Memory or disk space" and the application does not open. But by connecting with another account on the same machine, it works. It is not thus a general problem, but appropriate for a particular user. The size of the mask is sufficient, the problem does not come from there either.

The solution to resolve this problem is very simple. It is enough of :
1. Open the explorer.

2. Go under " c:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\SoftGrid Client " where username is the name of the account with which we cannot launch an application of the Office suite 2007.

3. To delete packages which causes problem, in that case, « OFFICE.2K7-42405C7C-D01E-4852 ».

4. Go then under " c:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\SoftGrid Client " where username is the name of the account with which we cannot launch an application of the Office suite 2007.

5. To delete packages which causes problem, in that case, « OFFICE.2K7-42405C7C-D01E-4852 ».

6. Launch the application which caused problem and this one should take care correctly.

My questions is : where from comes this problem ??? Because it rarely appears and is very unpleasant. Furthermore, I had this problem only with the Office suite 2007 and ever with another virtual application.
