Since you're new to certifications and you're working with the Visual studio suite, I'm going to echo what Microsoft says:

New to Microsoft Certification:  Pass Exam 70-536: TS: Microsoft .NET Framework – Application Development Foundation. This exam is the foundation prerequisite for all Visual Studio 2005 and Visual Studio 2008 MCTS and MCPD certifications.

Note If you pass this exam, you do not earn a certification, but you do earn access to the Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) member site, your Microsoft transcript, and other MCP community benefits. You only need to pass this exam once. http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/cert-vstudio.aspx

Once you've passed that exam, then it depends on what you actually do, you can see here: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/cert-vstudio.aspx#tab2

Now by doing the MCTS's you can work your way up to one (or more of the following) with VS 2005:
    MCPD: Web Developer
    MCPD: Windows Developer
    MCPD: Enterprise Application Developer

    See here: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/cert-vstudio.aspx#tab3

The when you migrate to VS 2008, you'll be able to do the upgrade exams (provided you complete a whole track on the 2005 route).

    Hope this helps :)

If the exam was still live, then it would have been an option.  However it isn't so "No".  See here: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/exams/70-306.mspx and http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/exam-dev.aspx#tab4

The 70-536 is the first exam you will have to take, after that then the next one (which is based closest to the 70-306, imo, is the Visual Basic version of the 70-526: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/exam.aspx?ID=70-526&locale=en-us

No, as I said the 70-306 is retired so you can't take it.

The 70-536 is for the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS): .NET Framework 2.0 Windows Applications and not the web one

I would say "yes" The 70-536 MSPress book is very good, however I have never just replied on 1 study resource.

The CBTNugget pack for the 70-536 is another very good resource: http://www.cbtnuggets.com/webapp/product?id=387

Plus Preplogic do good megaguides: http://www.preplogic.com/products/mega-guides/mega-guides-details.aspx?eid=771
