SSRS Report Server with SQL 2008 Standard will it work?

    Question

  • I am trying to configure SSRS and only have SQL Server 2008 standard. All the support forums refer to SQL 2008 R2. Will this not work with SQL Server 2008 standard?

  • OK the option is not there for it and not in SP1 or SP2, it does not look like it is available per  http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb326358.aspx

  • SQL Server 2008 Standard reporting service only included four capabilities: Microsoft Office integration, Built-in forms authentication, Report server application embedding and Ad-hoc reporting (Report Builder).

    What's your question?

  • Yes, you can install SSRS with SQL server 2008.  It should be on the same disk as the SQL Server 2008 install.  But you will not get the new charts/dials/graphs that come with R2; but you can certainly create and run reports in SSRS 2008.

  • OK I downloaded service Pack 2 for SQL 2008 and installed it. Following the instruction for configuring I am not getting the option in the SQL config manager the reporting service is not there to configure.

  • I think you just didn't click the check box for SQL reporting services when you did the initial install.  So do this, run the SQL 2008 setup.exe again.  You'll get to the screen where it asks what you want to install, you'll see data engine, integration services etc.  Uncheck all of those, and just check the SQL reporting services box.  That should do it for you.

  • That's odd.  So when you ran set up again did you select "New installation or add features to an existing installation"?  You'll see reporting services on this screen --  listed 5th from the top).  Uncheck everything but reporting services and continue the install.
