C# Windows Templates

    Question

  • Hello,

Although I can see the BI templates when creating a new project using SSDT (SQL Server 2012), I cannot find the C# Windows Template when creating a new project.

I installed SQL Server 2012 (included SSDT).

As suggested on other forums I installed Visual Studio 2010 SP 1 and tried the command: devenv.exe /InstallVSTemplates (run command line as administrator).

    Any suggestions?

    Regards,

    Eddy

  • Hello Eddy,

The free SSDT includes Visual Studio Shell with only the BI templates. For C# (as well as VB.NET) you need to purchase a full Version of Visual Studio, or a free Visual Studio Express Edition => http://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/products/visual-studio-express-vs.aspx

  • Thanks Olaf,

Actually I need both BI templates and C# templates (2 projects in 1 solution). Visual Studio Express has c# and SSDT (Visual Studio Shell) has the BI templates. I cannot combine them, as one is a 2013 version and the other is a 2010 version. I think I have to purchase the full version.

However I do not understand: Visual Studio is offered for free: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=23691. Isn't this the full version? Or do I need to upgrade SSDT to the 2013 version first.

    Greetings,

  • Got it working with Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate edition and an upgrade to SP1.

    Hello Eddy,

That's only a service pack (SP) for Visual Studio, which is free available; but Visual Studio itself isn't free.
