unable to connect from remote pc

  • I just installed SQL '12 on Windows Server 2012 (VM) and I'm able to connect to it from another pc (my sharepoint server and my local pc). I did the enabling of TCP/IP, set the ports, etc, and yet I still can't connect to it via another computer.

When I open Server Management Studio from my PC and try to connect to the db engine, I'm getting the following error message:

A network -related or instance specfic error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessbile.

    What can I be missing?

  • Hello,

Please configure Windows Firewall for SQL Server access on all computers as explained on the following article:
    Hope this helps.

  • can you ping it?

    can you connect locally?

    is your browser running?

if all that is ok, it will be 99% related to firewall settings.

  • I'm able to connect to it when i'm logged onto the server itself, I just unable to connect to it from another pc.

Now, I have SQL 2012 running on a Windows 8 server and I'm able to connect to that remotely just fine, Im just unable to connect to SQL 2012 running in on my Windows 2012 server.

  • Hello,

If you are trying to connect to a named instance, then you have to enable and start SQL Server Browser.

Alternatively, you can configure an static IP address using the following article:

To connect to a named instance use the following server name:  computer_name\instance_name.
    Hope this helps.

  • I did that and I'm using the servername\instancename and nothing.

I'm at a loss on this one at the moment. is there something on windows server 2012 that i have to change, check, etc. other then the firewall settings which are done.

EDIT: I think I may have found something, I just tried pinging the server and I can't, HOWEVER, when I log onto the server, I can browse the network and connect to network drives. So I'm at a a loss for a bit.

(time to walk away on this one for a bit and come back to it)

  • After some more poking around, I was able to connect to it, however, I had to turn off the firewall inbound connections on the domain tab, which I dont' like doing
